Red Nose Day 2015

SIDS and Kids SA is urging all South Australians to continue to help save babies’ lives and support a growing number of bereaved families by getting behind Red Nose Day this Friday, June 26. After the January Red Nose Day there was a 33% jump in bereavement support for families.

According to SIDS and Kids SA Chief Executive Officer Jerie Schmidt, the organisation has seen a dramatic increase in calls to its bereavement support services, with a jump of more than 30 per cent since the beginning of this year alone, so the support for the cause needs to continue.

“SAPOL and hospital social workers refer families to us, as we provide services for all family members affected by the terrible tragedy of losing a child up to the age of six. We’re the only counselling service in South Australia which is completely free and offers on-going support for as long as people need our help,” she says.

“The services we provide are able to help family members get back to health with a support group standing beside them in the most difficult of times. Without SIDS and Kids’ services there would be increased pressure and cost on our health system.”
“Red Nose Day plays a critical role in raising awareness around childhood safety and also raising much needed funds to allow us to continue to support a growing number of families all over SA,” says Ms Schmidt.

Every day, nine children under the age of four die suddenly and unexpectedly from causes including sleeping accidents, drowning, motor vehicle accidents, sudden onset illness, SIDS and stillbirth.

With very little Government support, raising funds on Red Nose Day is critical to enable SIDS and Kids to continue to support a growing number of Australian families.

“You cannot prepare yourself for the sudden or unexpected loss of a child. The loss of one child is likely to affect at least sixty people – grandparents, friends, siblings, aunties, uncles. How much support, and the rate at which they receive it, is solely dependent on the key services of SIDS and Kids SA. More than 50 new families will rely on our support this year,” said Ms Schmidt. “And we’re asking South Australia to dig deep for those affected.”

Supporters can get involved by purchasing a red nose, any Red Nose Day product, by making a donation or by setting up their own Everyday Hero fundraising account.

Visit Rundle Mall on Friday 26 June at 1pm to meet ‘My Kitchen Rules’ contestants, Vicky and Celine, will be handing out handmade Red Nose cupcake sticks and helping out at the Red Nose Day stall. There will also be all day fun family activities including a jumping castle and Disney characters
