Did You Visit Biggies At Bertram This Weekend? Here’s Why You Should Have…

From the streets of New York City, descend beneath Grenfell Street to discover an underground ode to legends of Hip-Hop, soul and funk. With Espresso Martini on tap.

Adelaide has reached another moment of evolution. After year’s of new venues espousing strong modern design statements with heavily curated drinks lists at their heart, there is something else emerging from beneath the surface. And it’s grittier. Perhaps even more like the 90s.

For those who remember the hey-dey of Vodka Bar and the pumping nights in the old Supermild Basement, Biggies At Bertram is a nostalgic return to no fuss good times. The depth of personality is immediately evident as you descend into the Basement at 73 Grenfell Street (just off Coromandel Place). From the massive ode to the Big Man himself to the immediate right of the entrance to the massive vinyl collection to the back of the decks next to the main bar, this is an intimate room with soul and a party in mind.

Similar to how Clever Little Tailor nailed the brief of a classic whiskey bar, Mississippi Moon as whitewashed delta moonshine hut Biggie’s At Bertram is a grungy New York City basement. It’s a hip-hop fiend’s delight with funk and soul also a big part of setting the tone for the room. The bar is stocked to the brim with a huge range of South Australia beer and wine but your eye can’t help but be drawn to the Espresso Martini on tap. Yes, that’s right. No waiting 10 minutes for the mixologist to faff over your espresso to booze ratio. It’s already sorted and it’s not a novelty – it’s tastes the real deal.

It’s not a large room. But nor should it be. Biggies’ owners Paul and Kay Crozier are not interested in the Saturday night swill. Their family and friends helped build this place (along with some invaluable assistance from Renew Adelaide) and they now want to build a family around it. So what does that mean in terms of what you can expect from there? A tinge of nostalgia and good times night-after-night.
