The Adelaide Central Market Authority (ACMA) has launched a competition calling for creative design ideas for the future use of the iconic 115-year-old Central Market Tower.

The competition will encourage Adelaide’s designers, architects and creative thinkers to submit ideas on how the long-term unoccupied Tower can be brought back to life while still keeping with the precinct’s rich history and heritage.

Adelaide Central Market Authority (ACMA) Chair Nick Begakis said the Tower was a hugely distinctive and recognisable landmark but had not been used in many years.

“The competition is a great way for the Central Market to work with the community to find a future use for the Tower and to assist in resolving challenges on access to the internal space,” Mr Begakis said.

“We are really encouraging individuals and teams that have a passion for the future direction and development of the City to make sure they get involved.”

The competition will run for a three to four month period with prizes for the winning and second placed entries and a special price for the best student design.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese is equally excited about the opportunity to work with the community on such an exiting project.

“The Adelaide Central Market is one of our city’s icons and is absolutely critical to Adelaide’s reputation for fine food and fresh produce, its building are also steeped in history,” Mr Haese said.

“While the Tower was built 115 years ago there are interestingly no records of its previous use. The competition presents a wonderful opportunity to draw on our community’s collective imagination to activate a heritage-listed building.”

The competition is part of the ACMA and Adelaide City Council’s vision to revitalize the Market precinct and to ensure it remains a sustainable food hub for the state of South Australia for many years to come.
