The October long weekend will see Hahndorf’s Main Street come alive as budding young (and old!) artists take to the streets to transform the town into a living work of art.
The inaugural Dawdle and Doodle Days are designed for the local community, and for those who don’t follow the AFL! – to come together, get active and illustrate their creative side.
One of the organizers, Mikyla Gilbert said that the Grand Final long weekend was a perfect time to organize an event not based around football.
“Not everyone is into it and local families are always looking for new and particularly, free things to do over a long weekend, said Mikyla.
“Coming together in a central location to spend time with friends and family whilst joining in with free activities is perfect for people of all ages”, she said.
Over 30 venues are involved in the Dawdle & Doodle Days with each providing supplies to get the creative juices flowing. There’s chalk for street scaping art and crayons, pencils, paper napkins and placemats for doodling. All of our ‘artists’ are encouraged to take photos of their masterpieces, post them on Facebook in the hope of winning some fantastic prizes.
See edgy, controversial and subversive street artist Jason Ankles (along Main Street) who will be joined by Brodie McCrossin, animator (at Hahndorf Candlemaker).
Don’t be surprised by the mystery ‘Colour Crew’ who, under the dark of night, creep into ‘bomb’ the street with brightly coloured knitted graffiti. This international trend, involving knitters of all ages, choose stationary objects like street lights , sign posts, park benches and trees and transform them with their trademark yarn. Visitors are also encouraged to join in and for those not familiar with knitting needles, there’s a tom boy stitch marathon at Misty Hollow’s.
Owned by the Adelaide Hills community this arty weekend is supported by the District Council of Mt Barker and the Hahndorf Business and Tourism Association adding further excitement and colour to the already popular town of Hahndorf.
