Three Australian arts companies have each been awarded $10,000 from the Adelaide Fringe Cultural Fund to present their work in next year’s Fringe.
The Cultural Fund was launched last year to enable the public to make donations that would provide financial assistance to Australian artists presenting their work in the Fringe.
Adelaide Fringe received more than 100 submissions from artists across the country in the inaugural round of grants.
The three grant recipients are:
- Adelaide theatre company isthisyours? will debut a new participatory theatre piece, ‘TheAwkward Years’, exploring the rollercoaster journey of being a teenager.
- Brisbane-based Black Honey Company will take to the stage with ‘Hot Brown HoneyBurlesque’, a humorous exploration of culture and politics through dance, circus and song.
- Melbourne theatre company We3 will present ‘The Long Pigs’, a profound, physical andvisually stunning black comedy.
Adelaide Fringe Director Greg Clarke said the successful applicants met the criteria of presenting work that was ambitious in delivering daring and diverse contemporary art for new audiences.
“As the Fringe is an open-access arts festival, many independent Fringe artists not only create the work but also take the financial risk to present it. Adelaide Fringe, with assistance from public donors, is proud to be able to support Australian artists and help foster daring new work,” Mr Clarke said.
Jude Henshall, from isthisyours?, said the company was thrilled to be a recipient of the inaugural Cultural Fund grants.
“The culture of Fringe audiences is one that embraces new ideas and takes smart risks in their viewing. The opportunity to present our new work The Awkward Years means that we feel encouraged by our audience and peers to keep innovating and presenting an alternative to the main stage,” Ms Henshall said.
Donations to the Adelaide Fringe Cultural Fund can be made at adelaidefringe.com.au. The 2015 Adelaide Fringe will run from 13 February – 15 March.
Artist registrations close on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 and the full 2015 program will be launched on Friday, November 28, 2014.
