The ever-popular British Film Festival opens next week at Palace Nova Cinemas.
Opening night kick-off on October 25th includes Pimms, wine, popcorn, British food and music, along with a screening of the beautiful film Breathe. Starring Claire Foy and Andrew Garfield, it tells the true story of the remarkable Robin Cavendish and his even more remarkable wife, Diana. Struck with polio in his 20s, he and Diana went on to live a rich life, working tirelessly for the disabled, particularly polio survivors such as himself, who were often paralysed from the neck down. Their son Jonathan Cavendish, is the producer of the film.
Other features include: Goodbye Christopher Robin, which tells the story of the boy behind the character, and his troubled relationship with his author father; England is Mine, a biopic of Morrissey; Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool, based on another true story, and starring the wonderful Annette Bening; Jawbone, a sort of British Raging Bull, and John Hurt’s last major film role, That Good Night. Hurt also appears in The Journey, which stars Timothy Spall as Ian Paisley and Colm Meaney as Martin McGuinness, in what looks to be another powerhouse performance from both of these actors.
As always there are some great documentaries as well, including Eric Clapton: Life in Twelve Bars and another special event for both lovers of film and fashion, Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards. On October 27th, this will premiere with Bulldog G & T and SOFI Spritz on arrival.
Closing night on November 15th will include drinks and live entertainment, along with the world premiere of Finding Your Feet, starring the always fabulous Celia Imrie and Imelda Staunton.
The retrospective section of the festival this year features mysteries: four Agatha Christie films, along with classic psychological thrillers Blow-Up and Victim.
This is always a superbly curated festival, which truly caters to the film lover, and this year is no exception. Tickets are selling fast, so delve in and be delighted!
