Culture Club Return To Australia For Round Three

Ok music lovers, if you missed them the first, or second time, then here’s your chance to have a musical experience you won’t forget in a hurry. Making up for a 35+ year wait, the legends have spoiled Aussies audiences by doing 3 shows in 18 months to the delight of fans both old and new.

We caught up again with the delightful guitarist and songwriter Roy Hay, who spoke with us this time last year almost to the day about the tour and how much it means to them to be making up for lost time! (Interview Here)

Oh, and a spoiler alert- he dropped an exclusive bit of hot gossip on us that will make fans Tumble!

Hello again Roy, third time in 18 months mate- wow!

“You can’t keep us away can you! (laughs).”

My witty reply- “Well, we did for 35 years didn’t we?” gets a great laugh from the man who clearly loves what he does, and who has a genuine warmness and gravity about him.

He goes one better..“As my friend says about the band, we’re like bloody buses. You don’t see one for hours and then all of a sudden they come in lots of three…(still laughing). We had such a great time down there, the last one at Seppeltsfield was a bit cold though.”

That’s why it was at a winery- so we could drink to stay warm:)

Hay considers this latest string of tours as the band effectively ‘re-writing the ending’ of the Culture Club story. The band broke up not long after they formed, and despite several reunion attempts they never really held things together. “That was the initial plan, but it’s become more than that and we’ve opened up our audience again. The demand keeps growing and we’re loving it. With (Boy) George being on The Voice there’s another market that’s opened up for us down there. It’s a great place to come play music.”

Having been to the last two concerts, the fan base is indeed mixed and not just those of us who caught the band the first time round, so to speak. Younger people, under 35, have flocked to Culture Club gigs for a taste of what the 80’s, and true diversity was about.

“It will be interesting to see the mix this time, I reckon it was about 70/30 last time, before George did the voice  (70% original fans, 30% new), so hopefully we’ll see more new faces. After this tour though, we’ll be finally working on the album (Tribes)to finish it. Then we might have to come again to Tour the album. We might get a May 2018 release and there’s a rumour that we might perform the first single live on The Voice in April/May!”

There you have it fans, a Glam Exclusive from the band themselves!

Recently married again, Hay is a happy man with a grateful outlook. “It was a 3 day party, Boy George and Mikey (Craig) came, although Jon (Moss) couldn’t make it due to family things but it was great. Bands a funny things, a combination of friends and family. You don’t really pick your band mates, you end up with this bunch of people. 35 years later you think’ these guys have been in my life THAT long? Who are these guys? We’re  a dysfunctional family of sorts,” (laughs again)

Culture Club represented true harmony in many ways. They had an obviously gay frontman, a not so obviously gay drummer, a straight hairdresser, and a coloured guy. This was the 80’s don’t forget, and things were less open minded than now. They broke some ground and were in many ways the original ‘trendsetters’ both figuratively and literally.

“One of the positives that we unintentionally did back then was to make people question their capacity for acceptance of others. I think the world as we know it could do with a bit of Culture Club. Aspects of the world are becoming more divisive.”

So, what’s different with this tour?

“We’ll throw a few surprises in there, maybe a few covers but we’ll have to do something different this time. There’ll be some newer songs though.”

How do you interpret, or feel some of the older songs nowadays in comparison to when they were written or first performed?

“I appreciate them more now for sure. When you’re young these songs just flow out but looking back, some of them are really special. I think ‘I wrote that when I was 19’…wow! We all capture those moments a lot better now.”

And that they do- Culture Club are a fantastic act and have a wonderful legacy of songs. They are truly amazing and put on one hell of a show. Don’t miss a colourful performance with lots of great music. You’ll want to dance the night away!
