Cult Fans Amass At HQ

If you were looking for a quiet Sunday evening, then this was definitely NOT the gig for you. Adelaide’s own HQ hosted UK rockers The Cult in an epic Sunday Service of rockstar proportions.

Support act ‘The Art’, formerly ‘The Follow’ consisting of four members, hail from Sydney. Boy what a sound!  What a show! Front man Azaria Byrne and bassist Kara Jayne’s vocals were sublime. Max Warne’s guitar riffs were at times atmospheric, but he will punch you in the face with his searing guitar solos. The Art are very engaging and are sure to pull you in with their stylish but edgy rock n roll sound. Their new album entitled “All in the mind” is out now. Get on it.

The Cult opened with Wildflower and it began. I mean far out, Billy Duffy! Can I start there? The man can seriously shred! Rock and roll as it should be, done right! The man is an absolute guitar God whose riffs will reach out and drag you to where you would rather be, in one swift and powerful swoop. Duffy proves that shredding on an axe doesn’t always have to be overly intricate; it just needs to be used in such a way that the listener gets to “feel” what the music is trying to tell them. And Billy will MAKE you feel it!

In a previous interview, Ian Astbury describes The Cult’s album ‘Choice of Weapon’ as “raw’’ and coming from a place of experience.” They exude that persona with all of the songs they performed and in turn their audience was hooked. Here is a band spanning over three decades, who are ever changing, yet still remain true to their art. Their performance was polished & Ian Astbury’s vocals were flawless. His sound is timeless & the power and heart that pours from his range is incredible. Playing a good mix of new and old, the audience most certainly got their Cult fill.

Going in to the show with an open mind although admittedly not overly familiar with them, I walked out a fan of their art, of their showmanship, and of their evolution. The fact that they have spanned over three decades, yet still draw a mammoth crowd is inspiring! I mean, what a legacy. Their audience were devoted, some with many years under their belts and some just beginning to add notches to theirs. The Cult embody true rock and roll. It’s an attitude, a feeling. The Cult delivers it with style and intellect. Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy complement each other’s musical capabilities perfectly, never overshadowing the other. With a good mix of old and new, The Cult know their audience and know them well. The performance started out on a high, reached a serious and sombre middle, and ended with an almighty bang!
