Fringe Parade

This Friday night’s sensational Fringe Parade heralds the start of a month-long celebration of irresistible Adelaide Fringe festivities. Thousands of amazing artists from around the world are descending on the city and Fringe venues are setting up all over town.

Adelaide Fringe Director Greg Clarke said this year’s Fringe Parade was going to be “absolutely massive featuring more than 80 stunning floats, great music, Fringe Ambassador Kitty Flanagan and seven spectacular giant Sirens”.

More than 850 Fringe performers will ‘strut their stuff’ down King William St from North Terrace to Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga promoting their Fringe shows.

Six breathtaking Kaurna fire sculptures of a goanna, shield, snake, ibis, emu and kangaroo, will light up the night followed by the psychedelic ‘Experience Something New’ float based on this year’s colourful Fringe poster.

To celebrate the ‘Experience Something New’ theme, the Parade will be staged in sections to highlight the diverse art forms that can be experienced throughout the Fringe.

Each art-form will be represented by a stunning Siren more than 4m tall and 3m wide. In Greek mythology, Sirens were dangerous yet beautiful creatures who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices.

“Our captivating Fringe Sirens are certainly beautiful, and with each one a different colour they will playfully entice us to experience their magical worlds of cabaret, circus, comedy, dance, theatre, music and visual art. As they glide past, you will be entranced by their illuminated dresses of a thousand sparkling lights,” Mr Clarke said.

The red Siren’s section, the world of cabaret, will feature the BankSA float ‘Stars behind the Fringe’ celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the bank’s Principal Partnership with Adelaide Fringe. The float will feature choreographed BankSA staff performing alongside Fringe cabaret stars.

In the purple Siren’s world of dance you will see a moving swimming pool complete with synchronized swimmers and the orange Siren’s world of visual art will feature projections by renowned local artist Emma Hack.

The world of music will be led by the yellow Siren and will feature Adelaide Airport’s ‘Flying down to Rio’ float, a life size replica plane complete with ‘Busby Berkley’ style dancers on its wings.

Mr Clarke encouraged Parade goers to explore and discover the many Fringe venues open until late, or see one of the 40 Fringe shows that are on Friday night following the Parade.

The Fringe Funhouse in Rundle Mall will also open on Friday with a plethora of Fringe artists giving audiences a free taste of their shows across the four-week festival. Performers will be taking to the Fringe Funhouse stage until 10.30pm on Parade night.

For 31 summer days and nights, audiences can choose from an enormous program of Fringe events featuring 121 cabaret shows, 37 circus and physical theatre shows, 328 comedy events, 33 dance shows, six film events, 226 music events, 109 theatre productions, 93 art exhibitions, 57 children’s events and 48 special events.

“This year I encourage you to take a risk when choosing which Fringe shows to see and go and ‘Experience Something New’,” Mr Clarke said.

“Of course see your favourites, but take a punt, see something a little bit different and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. You might even discover the next big thing!”
