If you’re a race day attendee in South Australia, knowing a good milliner is as important as deciding which shoes match your clutch. Your hat or fascinator will make or break your outfit, and is often the biggest talking point of the racing events you may attend. Just in time for Adelaide Cup, one of our best local milliners, Melissa Barnes, is opening her studio doors for the first time this weekend to showcase her ready-to-wear collection.

Not only will her unique range of millinery be available for purchase, but there will be 50% off her signature lace headbands and crowns. Melissa will be sharing tips on how to wear millinery and providing race wear styling advice for those undecided on what to wear to the Adelaide Cup. This coming from a regular face at the Fashions on the Field is helpful advice indeed!

The open studio will give the public a chance to view where the millinery magic happens. “Each person is unique and your millinery should match your personality,” advises Melissa. “Trying on a headpiece is really important and this Saturday will give local ladies the opportunity to try and buy what they see online”.

Since moving back to her hometown of Adelaide after living in Darwin for 7 years, she has become well know within racing circles throughout SA and Australia, for her unique sense of style and high quality creations. Her designs have been an integral part of countless winning Fashions on the Field outfits around Australia, including her own, as she competes as a finalist for the TRSA Fashion at the Races competition for the second year in a row. Melissa was also the winner of the 2012 Fashions on the Field at the highly contested Darwin Cup.

Many local Adelaide celebrities have been ‘Adorned’ by Melissa’s bespoke works of art. These include A-listers such as Cat Southern, Kelly Noble, Anna Vlach and, more recently, Stephanie Cocca and Lucy Polkinghorne from Channel 7 for Derby Day in Melbourne. “I’m very excited that there will be a few local celebrities that will be wearing my pieces at the Adelaide Cup this year”, Melissa says, “it’s a great feeling to see your work being worn and appreciated”.

Melissa’s busy schedule means that she is often be booked out 3 months in advance and working on orders 12 months of the year. With her love for racing fashion Melissa is evolving her business to incorporate racewear styling and consultation. An entire outfit, from head to toe, can be put together by Melissa for Fashions on the Field or just a day at the races.

Recently Melissa’s design won the best hat in the Kangaroo Island Cup’s Fashion on the Field. So if you’re out to make a statement this Adelaide Cup race day and ‘Adorn’ yourself with a bespoke creation from Melissa Barnes.
