Donald O’Connor famously sang, “Make ‘em laugh, make ‘em laugh, make ‘em laugh” and laugh we did at the stand-up comedy night at the Marion Hotel.

The show featured the likes of Mickey D, who opened in perfect comedic style, followed by Steve Copley, Michael Bowley, Chris Knight, Jason Chong and Titty Bar Ha Ha, the headline act all the way from the UK.

The Marion Hotel is a great venue for this style of show and it was set up to ensure that the audience we’re close enough to the performers to get involved. Crowd numbers were a little bit disappointing for such great talent, but nevertheless, they were involved and highly responsive as these amazing performers delivered some hilarious comedy.

No comedy show would flow smoothly if it weren’t for the MC and, in this instance, Mickey D was outstanding at creating a fantastic atmosphere and keeping the audience belly laughing during the change over of performers, with his off-the-cuff dry comedy that was simply brilliant.

Kicking off the performers was Steve Copley who, with his stance alone and his persona, had people immediately engaged and brimming with smiles. His monotone is simply funny to listen to and a gag about learning the Bible by listening to it on his iPod cracked up the audience.

Michael Bowley continued to rouse the audience with his introduction, where he said that he was happy that his comedy was “getting people laid” after it was revealed that a couple in the audience had met at a previous performance of his. He had a strong stage presence and confidence.

Chris Knight fed well off the audience and delivered some funny gags; his closing was brilliant.

Having seen Jason Chong before, he never fails to deliver. Jason is extremely quick-witted and can think on his feet; he always has the crowd in stitches and this night was no exception.

The headline act, Titty Bar Ha Ha, are a naughty little comic duo who are simply amazing! They delivered a repertoire of catchy original tunes that were quite cheeky. Their vintage, burlesque-style costumes set the scene perfectly and their ability to engage the crowd was superb. Both Boo Dwyer & Nai Bowen, who played Gloria and Hope, maintained their characters without faltering. You can’t not like them if you appreciate a little bit of dark comedy fused with some fabulous vocals!

They are all seasoned performers and their repertoire’s were original and provided continuous laughs throughout the show. They each had about 10 minutes stage time, aside from the main act, which was around 40 minutes, and they all worked the crowd well within that timeframe.

Like Mickey D said in his opening words, “Commit. If you think it’s funny, laugh”!

Support local artists and local venues, as well as international acts that are gracing our shores and get along to a comedy night at the Marion Hotel, every Wednesday night. It is $15 well spent!
