For four decades since forging their iconic reputation at the famous Largs Pier Hotel, Adelaide’s Cold Chisel, have defined Australian rock ‘n’ roll. Returning home to Adelaide to perform to over 30,000 fans at their exclusive 40th anniversary concert, Cold Chisel will be honoured with an induction into the AMC South Australian Music Hall Of Fame on Sunday 1 March 2015 during the Clipsal 500 Adelaide.
Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Phil Small and Don Walker will be welcomed to the Clipsal 500 Adelaide starters grid on Pit Straight before the commencement of the race where they will be presented with their AMC South Australian Music Hall Of Fame commemorative medallions by The Premier of South Australia, the Honourable Jay Weatherill. Former Cold Chisel drummer, the late Steve Prestwich, will be honoured posthumously, with his medallion to be accepted at the same time by his brother, Tim Prestwich.
The committee of the AMC (Adelaide Music Collective) South Australian Music Hall Of Fame would like to take this opportunity to honour the members of Cold Chisel, and invite them to join the ranks of industry professionals who have already been inducted since the establishment of the awards in March 2014. Artists such as the late Jim Keays, Glenn Shorrock, John ‘Swanee’ Swan, John and Rick Brewster (The Angels), John Bywaters (The Twilights), Peter Tilbrook (Masters Apprentices), Peter Combe, John Schumann and Doug Ashdown are some of the well-known names amongst the first recipients.
The South Australian Music Hall Of Fame was founded by legendary Adelaide radio announcer David ‘Daisy’ Day, who handed over 40 years’ worth of South Australian music memorabilia to the AMC when the collective was formed in February 2014. The AMC South Australian Music Hall Of Fame strives to celebrate the careers of some of the State’s finest and most successful artists, as well as working towards creating relationships with young upcoming musicians.
“It’s been a long time since we started making a racket in Elizabeth”, says Cold Chisel frontman, Jimmy Barnes. “In those days it was a pretty rough place but that hardness helped give us our edge. Cold Chisel sound like we sound because we came from a particular part of Adelaide at a particular moment in time.”
“There couldn’t be a South Australian Music Hall Of Fame without Cold Chisel in it”, says David ‘Daisy’ Day. “The AMC has been waiting for the perfect opportunity to have the band together in Adelaide so that we could honour them. It took a unique kind of band to win over tough pub audiences in Adelaide back then. Chisel did and they went on to be able to do it anywhere, never forgetting where they started out”.
Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said Cold Chisel was the quintessential South Australian rock band whose music serves as an historical record of South Australian life.
“Cold Chisel lived and shared through their lyrics the essence of South Australia in the 1970s and 80s. Tales of growing up in the Adelaide suburbs, days working on the docks at Port Adelaide, the pub music scene and the value of mateship, these are stories that resonate with Australians to this day.
“Their songs have stood the test of time and are now loved by generations of Australians. They are truly deserving of this honour and I can’t wait to see them on stage on Sunday night.”
It’s been a long time coming but Adelaide’s favourite sons will return home for one of the most anticipated rock concerts of 2015, a special performance for South Australia.
The AMC South Australian Music Hall Of Fame are proud to be associated with Australia’s biggest motor race, the Clipsal 500 Adelaide, to honour Cold Chisel.
