Charlie'sCountryPic#01After its world premiere at last year’s Adelaide Film Festival and award-winning run at the Cannes Film Festival, the acclaimed Charlie’s Country will open in Australian cinemas next week.

Directed by local filmmaker Rolf de Heer, Charlie’s Country debuts across Australia on Thursday July 17, released by Entertainment One.

To celebrate, Adelaide Film Festival CEO and Director Amanda Duthie will be hosting a Q&A preview with de Heer in Adelaide at Palace Nova Cinemas Tuesday July 15, from 6.30pm.

Screen legend David Gulpilil delivers a powerhouse performance in Charlie’s Country, recently recognised at Cannes with the Best Actor Award, in the Un Certain Regard category. Through the heartbreaking, humorous and ultimately hopeful story of one man’s search for belonging, Charlie’s Country offers a deeply affecting portrait of contemporary Aboriginal Australia.

Critics at Cannes hailed the filmed and Gulpilil’s performance, with The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney declaring it a “delicate but powerful film that functions as both a stinging depiction of marginalization and as a salute to the career of the remarkable actor who inhabits almost every frame”.

Charlie’s Country was one of the works proudly supported by the Adelaide Film Festival Investment Fund (AFFIF).

Adelaide Film Festival (AFF) CEO and Festival Director Amanda Duthie said of the success of Charlie’s Country: “The ongoing collaboration between Rolf and David makes for a brilliant film in their trilogy of films. Adelaide Film Festival is pleased to have worked with them on Ten Canoes and now Charlie’s Country. We can’t wait for all of Australia to see this film.”

The success of Charlie’s Country follows on from the international success of other AFFIF supported features, including 52 Tuesdays, directed by Sophie Hyde and a winner at the recent Berlin Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival; the international hit Tracks, filmed in South Australia and starring Mia Wasikowska; and the critically acclaimed The Darkside, from director Warwick Thornton.

Ms Duthie called on entries for the 2015 AFFIF, which focuses on the support of feature films and feature length documentary projects along with short films, animation and new media projects. More information can be found at http://adelaidefilmfestival.org/affif/funding/
