CFS Volunteers Honoured Today

tduSouth Australia’s Country Fire Service is the focus of today’s third stage of the Santos Tour Down Under, with a volunteer firefighter to present the Cycle Instead Young Rider Jersey at the end of the stage.

Captain Daryl Hutchins, from the Paracombe unit of the CFS, will present the jersey to the leading young rider to honour the commitment and dedication of all emergency service volunteers during the recent Adelaide Hills bushfire.

Today’s 143-kilometre Thomas Foods Stage 3 began on The Parade at Norwood at 11.00am and will take the peloton through some of the communities affected by the bushfire before arriving at the finish line in Paracombe.

The riders will pass through communities including Houghton, Inglewood, Gumeracha, Birdwood, Mount Torrens, Lobethal, Woodside, Lenswood, and Cudlee Creek.

South Australian Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said Paracombe is hosting a stage finish for the first time in the 17-year history of the Santos Tour Down Under.

“Like Tuesday’s Hostworks Stage 1 which travelled through some of the bushfire-hit communities, today’s stage will hopefully bring some excitement for the people and businesses who’ve suffered during the past few weeks,” he said.

“It’s great that after working closely with the emergency services, Tour organisers have been able to go ahead with Thomas Foods Stage 3 with no changes to the route. And having Daryl present the jerseys will be the perfect way to end a day of great cycling action and community spirit.”

Emergency Services Minister Tony Piccolo said asking Captain Hutchins to present the Cycle Instead Young Rider Jersey today was a wonderful way to acknowledge the work of the CFS and other agency volunteers during the recent bushfire emergency.

“Our emergency service personnel – both paid and volunteer – did a magnificent job protecting the community during the recent fires,” Minister Piccolo said.

“Everyone across South Australia is thankful for their efforts and today is just a small gesture of appreciation and to acknowledge their efforts.”
