Having never been on the game, it’s a great surprise to find myself with an unexpected Candy Crush.
Candy, in this instance, is far removed from the addictive game that’s swept the world, but she is still addictive, in a more glamorous, sophisticated way.
Candy Chambers (AKA Jamie Jewell from Channel 10’s I Will Survive) is a sensitive, classy, multi-award winning ex porn star whose life lessons are interspersed with great tunes ranging from lounge and jazz, to blues and cabaret.
She sings her own songs and is backed by a 3-piece band and a risqué wit. The only thing bad about this American diva is her compulsion to change outfits every 20 minutes or so. Short as they are, the three breaks would be better delivered as a single interval in this 90 minute show.
Chambers pole dances, leads a conga line, presents a quiz and engages in affirming tales of her life when not asking the audience to sing along. She’s soft spoken and charming through and through, with the sparkle of a drag queen but the decorum of a Queen. Her messages about loving yourself, saying “yes”, and just getting into the groove of now are all valuable lessons disguised behind her cheeky wit and friendly audience interaction.
Writer and Director David Paul Jobling opens the program with a word or two that not only introduces the star but warms the audience up with a quick laugh or two. He sets the mood which is sustained by the leggy lady to the very end.
Sweet, melodic, funny and fashionable… No wonder I’ve got a Candy Crush.
