Grammy-nominated Paul van Dyk is without question one of the biggest electronic dance music artists in the world today, with a rich and legendary history stretching back to the early 90s. Now after a 5 year absence, Australian trance fans are eagerly awaiting his return to our shores, following the news that he will be presenting his very own Evolution arena to the Future Music Festival, featuring bespoke staging and production with awe-inspiring visuals.

Debuting the Evolution show at Coachella in April 2011, the integrated audio-visual show was the result of intensive development. Van Dyk explains:

"Over the last few years, individual live production became more and more important in the touring circle, and I was looking into what was going on. There are quite a lot of impressive screens, but I realized that there's no real creative input on those screens. This is when I reached out to the people who are pretty much f***ing amazing at what they do and I explained what my aim is and where I wanted to go. The new album is called Evolution, so we'd sit together and have hours and hours of conversation about all these different paths that evolution takes. The intro starts with the nebula, and of course the Big Bang, which is the big kick off, then it goes into the developing of the planets and individual life. Then it goes into our architectural grids and multimedia world, so basically all those different elements of the show are featured visually”

PVD’s new album Evolution has been confirmed for release in March 2012, just in time for Future Music Festival. His first studio album since 2007's In Between and his first full length offering since 2008's The Best Of Paul van Dyk, the new record will feature 16 tracks in total. Paul van Dyk said that Evolution “demonstrates my personal evolution as an artist, rather than what is a reflection of the latest trendy sound”

Accompanying PVD in Australia is an all-star cast of disc spinners, including Garuda's Gareth Emery, voted no. 7 in the worlds Top 100 DJs in 2010; the youngest DJ ever to crack the top ten. Alongside Emery are John O'Callaghan and Orjan Nilsen, two of trance music's brightest stars.

Paul Van Dyk presents the Evolution Stage, touring nationally with Future Music Festival.

Future Music Festival 2012 is in Adelaide on Monday, March 12 at Ellis Park. Tickets available through www.ticketmaster.com.au or 136100.

	Reviewed Friday 27th January 2012

Venue: ARTS Theatre, Angas Street, Adelaide
Season: Conluded
Duration: 2hrs 40min incl interval

Set in 1933 this popular 1977 Broadway musical is based on the long running comic strip, Little Orphan Annie, by Harold Gray (1894-1968). Annie was left at an orphanage by her parents when she was only a baby, with a note that said that they would return to collect her. She is now eleven years of age and is, optimistically, still waiting for their return. The feisty young redhead's arch-enemy is the alcoholic Miss Hannigan, who runs the orphanage where Annie and many other little girls are bullied and mistreated by her.

When the billionaire, Oliver Warbucks, send his assistant, Grace Farrell, to bring an orphan into his home for two weeks at Christmas she selects Annie, much to Miss Hannigan's chagrin. Warbucks is enchanted by Annie and plans to adopt her, until she says that the only present that she wants for Christmas is to be reunited with her parents. When Warbucks tries to find Annie's parents, offering a large sum of money to them if they come forward, Miss Hannigan's crooked brother 'Rooster' and his girlfriend, Lily St. Regis, armed with intimate information about Annie that Miss Hannigan has given them, appear in disguise to claim Annie and the money.

Director, Nadine Wood, Musical Director, Deborah Brennan, and Choreographer, Lauren Dempsey took on a daunting task and accomplished great things. This production was put together in only ten days and featured a huge cast and a live orchestra. Each of the major characters has two people cast in the role, alternating with one another at each performance. All of the adult roles, except for 'Daddy' Warbucks, are played by young people, well below the stage age of their characters. This all adds extra difficulties. The set was smart and made excellent use of projected scenes to allow fast set changes and the costumes looked the part, too.

Annie was played, on the night that I attended, by Lauren Esposito, who was a real bundle of energy, ideally suiting the character. She gave Annie a sense of playful fun, as well as handling the moments of pathos beautifully. Her solos were delightfully sung and made the role her own.

Miss Hannigan was played by Naomi Crosby, who engaged in enormous amounts of physical comedy, generating equally enormous bouts of laughter. Her comic timing is spot on and she sings wonderfully, too. She is one to watch.

Oliver 'Daddy' Warbucks was played by one of Adelaide audiences favourite performers, Adam Goodburn, who brought just the right blend of the emotionally remote, hard-working and efficient billionaire with widespread political influence and the lonely bachelor, who unexpectedly discovers his humanity again through the beguiling influence of Annie. Goodburn convincingly conveys the change from this cold businessman to a warm and loving step-father. This was another satisfying performance, showing why he is so popular.

Madeleine Russell played his secretary, Grace Farrell, with loads of warmth, charm, a nicely measured degree of sympathy and support, and a neatly underplayed indication that her interest in him and his welfare was rather more than that of an employee to an employer.

Buddy Dawson, as 'Rooster', and Tahlia Fantone, as Lily St. Regis, are a great double act as the conniving confidence tricksters, driving each other along at a great pace and, when joined by Naomi Crosby for the Easy Street number, the three brought the house down.

There was equally good work from all of those in the minor roles, far too many too mention individually, and also from the huge chorus. The big numbers, with the entire ensemble singing and dancing with unbridled enthusiasm, were amazing and drew plenty of applause.

Unfortunately, this production only ran for a few performances and is already concluded. Such a pity that it could not have run for another week, so that many more people could have had the enjoyment of seeing it.

Yelawolf, the edgy Southern rap talent signed by Eminem to his Shady Records imprint, will be touring Australia this March, fresh off the release of his debut album Radioactive.

‘I think it’s a perfect word to describe where I’m going,’ says the Alabama born rapper. ‘It’s the fallout, the aftermath of everything I’ve been through and here’s what’s left. This radioactive material,’ says Yelawolf.

After years of touring the mixtape circuit, rubbing shoulders with the likes of RUN DMC and The Beastie Boys and laying down hooks for Juelz Santana and Slim Thug, the rapper (born Michael Atha) broke out in grand fashion with his critically acclaimed independent release Trunk Muzik. After releasing garage and basement demos since the 2000s, Wolf is now pleased to show off what is his ‘official debut’.

‘I see this album as my Southernplayalistic and I hope it does what ‘Hey Ya!’ or ‘B.o.B’ did for Outkast,’ says the artist, who was featured on Big Boi’s 2010 single ‘You Ain’t No DJ’, produced by Andre 3000. ‘The goal of making albums is seeing where else you can go. I made sure everything I made was at the core, true to what I was’

Yelawolf will visit Australia late March for his debut shows from coast to coast. He plays Fowlers Live in Adelaide on Wednesday, March 28 with support acts Briggs, Grifters Inc + special guests. Tickets available via www.moshtixcom.au, on sale Fri 3rd Feb.

In 2012 , Future Music Festival continues to break new ground, delivering more international talent than ever before.

The Likes Of You represents electronic music and clubbing at its most cutting edge. Pushing the musical boundaries for the last five years in clubs throughout Australia, every March, Future Music hosts the ‘techno tent’ at festivals across the country. Take the underground approach of The Likes Of You and times it by a thousand and you get a mini techno festival within a festival, with an atmosphere that is unparalleled.

Leading the charge one of the most influential electronic artists of our time, Aphex Twin (aka Richard James) – poised to make his eagerly anticipated return to Australian shores following a 10-year hiatus. With limited performances at only the world’s top festivals this is a once in a lifetime chance to see his live show in all its glory. Leave your expectations and inhibitions at home as Aphex Twin gets set to change the way you think with his mind-bending performance.

Cocoon’s head honcho Sven Vath, Future Music Festivals very own techno mascot returns once again to steer the ship in the underground direction and he brings with him an all-star ensemble of techno royalty including Dubfire, Oliver Huntemann and Resident Advisors newly crowned Number 1 DJ, Jamie Jones who is undoubtedly hungry for the power as he gets set to make his Australian festival debut.

Adding some live action into the mix, the uber cool Azari & III return to Australia after wowing crowds with their whistle stop tour last year. Featuring the talents of Alixander, Dinamo Azari, Starving Yet Full and Fritz Hedler, their live show need to be seen to be believed, renowned to induce even the most timid dancers out of the corner they are set to get each and every one of you a little bit hot under the collar.

Last but by no means least and rounding off this impressive cast we throw a wildcard into the tent in the form of Cape Town’s trio of rap-ravers Ninja, Yo Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi Tek otherwise known as Die Antwoord.

The Likes Of You, touring Nationally with Future Music Festival March 3 – 12

Future Music Festival 2012 is in Adelaide on Monday March 12 at Ellis Park. Tickets available through www.ticketmaster.com.au or 136100.
