After eight years in Light Square, they are now in a brand new, much larger, basement space in the West End district, close to the heart of the city.

Established in 2003 as an intimate World Music club, Zhivago quickly gained a reputation for being a casual creative space where people comfortably mingle, converse and dance the night away.

They evolved in 2005 changing the music and the feel of the club, becoming one of Adelaide’s most intriguing and talked about clubs in the West End.

They are fortunate to have consistently experienced a strong trade over the years, based on their loyal crowd following. After weekly line ups becoming a common occurrence, they decided to expand the club to accommodate all, and take it to the next level! They have doubled their capacity to 250 allowing for more vibrant revelling.

A brand-new element they’re incorporating into the Zhivago experience is the introduction of their two exclusive bar areas that can be hired for private parties with service provided by their gorgeous “Strut Crew.” They will serve drinks to your table and provide the ultimate experience in Nightclub hospitality.

Another signature feature is their dedication to art, so they’ve enlisted the talented services of their favourite prominent Adelaide Street Artists, Tarns (87, Coldkrush Gallery) and Monk (96, Toy soldiers Member).

So put on your best threads, and strap yourself in for the wild ride that is the Zhivago Experience. Friday nights “Skream”, Saturday nights “High Heels”, and Industry night is “Black Cheery Sundays.” For more information on their featured nights and music line-ups, check out the guide on their new
website www.zhivago.com.au or in the street press.

Grammy-nominated Paul van Dyk is without question one of the biggest electronic dance music artists in the world today, with a rich and legendary history stretching back to the early 90s. Now after a 5 year absence, Australian trance fans are eagerly awaiting his return to our shores, following the news that he will be presenting his very own Evolution arena to the Future Music Festival, featuring bespoke staging and production with awe-inspiring visuals.

Debuting the Evolution show at Coachella in April 2011, the integrated audio-visual show was the result of intensive development. Van Dyk explains:

"Over the last few years, individual live production became more and more important in the touring circle, and I was looking into what was going on. There are quite a lot of impressive screens, but I realized that there's no real creative input on those screens. This is when I reached out to the people who are pretty much f***ing amazing at what they do and I explained what my aim is and where I wanted to go. The new album is called Evolution, so we'd sit together and have hours and hours of conversation about all these different paths that evolution takes. The intro starts with the nebula, and of course the Big Bang, which is the big kick off, then it goes into the developing of the planets and individual life. Then it goes into our architectural grids and multimedia world, so basically all those different elements of the show are featured visually”

PVD’s new album Evolution has been confirmed for release in March 2012, just in time for Future Music Festival. His first studio album since 2007's In Between and his first full length offering since 2008's The Best Of Paul van Dyk, the new record will feature 16 tracks in total. Paul van Dyk said that Evolution “demonstrates my personal evolution as an artist, rather than what is a reflection of the latest trendy sound”

Accompanying PVD in Australia is an all-star cast of disc spinners, including Garuda's Gareth Emery, voted no. 7 in the worlds Top 100 DJs in 2010; the youngest DJ ever to crack the top ten. Alongside Emery are John O'Callaghan and Orjan Nilsen, two of trance music's brightest stars.

Paul Van Dyk presents the Evolution Stage, touring nationally with Future Music Festival.

Future Music Festival 2012 is in Adelaide on Monday, March 12 at Ellis Park. Tickets available through www.ticketmaster.com.au or 136100.

Currently rolling out Stage 1 of its Go Green with Public Lighting project, Council will progressively replace all of its 5,000 existing public lights with energy efficient LED globes in an effort to cut back electricity use and carbon emissions.

“This innovative project demonstrates Council’s commitment to a sustainable and environmentally-friendly city,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.

“We are the first Council in South Australia and one of the first in the country to install energy efficient LED lights on a large scale.”

“They are a shining light for sustainability and will provide high-quality and consistent white light, adding to the vibrancy and safety of city streets.”

Stage 1 will see a total of 405 public lights replaced with the latest in light emitting diode (LED) technology at the following locations: Sir Donald Bradman Drive, Grote Street, Wakefield Street, Wakefield Road, Glen Osmond Road, King William Street, Medindie Road, Victoria Square, Light Square / Morphett Street and Montefiore Road.

The ageing lights that are being replaced are at the end of their lifespan and are predominantly energy-intensive metal halide, mercury vapour and high pressure sodium lights. The new LED lights use much less energy and therefore produce far fewer carbon emissions, deliver high quality and consistent lighting and will maintain high levels of output over time.

“The first stage is expected to reduce energy use, carbon emissions and cost by 38% with a payback of just over 6 years,” Stephen said.

“This equates to 200,650 kWh per annum and a reduction of 144 tonnes of carbon – the equivalent of taking 37* cars off the road each year.”

The project is part of Council’s Energy Management Action Plan 2011-2014, adopted by Council last May. Planning for Stage 2 is currently underway and will involve the replacement of further street and pedestrian lighting.

Council set a target to reduce carbon emissions from its own operations by 60% by 2012 and achieved this interim target ahead of schedule by the end of the 2009/10 financial year. It is now on schedule to becoming completely carbon neutral by 2020.
The critically acclaimed Snowtown took out four of the five awards for which it was nominated, including Best Direction for Justin Kurzel and Best Lead Actor for Daniel Henshall.

Snowtown was such a success that fellow SA production Red Dog seemed to have been forgotten – until it claimed the Samsung AACTA Award for Best Film. Hugo Weaving won Best Supporting Actor for the SA-made Oranges and Sunshine, while Adelaide actress Sarah Snook took out Best Lead Actress in a Television Drama for her role in Sisters of War (ABC1).

AACTA President Geoffrey Rush and Ambassador Cate Blanchett shared presenting duties with an abundance of Australian talent, including Rachael Taylor, Mia Wasikowska, Miranda Kerr, Jacki Weaver and others. Olivia Newton-John kicked off the ceremony by performing a medley of songs from the soundtrack of her latest film, the recently released A Few Best Men.

Best Actor winner Daniel Henshall was eager to sing the praises of the South Australian film industry and the new Adelaide Studios at Glenside.

"I love the South Australian Film Corp and I love the Adelaide Film Festival – I think what they do is brilliant in supporting Australian film," he told Glam Adelaide.

"Taking on risky projects the way they do, doing what they do in supporting this country and its film is just brilliant."

Australian supermodel and actress Megan Gale looked striking in a lacy gown by Alex Perry. Chatting about her ambitions for the future, she explained that she had put her acting career on hiatus to focus on opportunities such as Project Runway. However, she quickly added that she was keeping her options open and waiting for the right acting project.

"There've definitely been opportunities and things that've come up, but I'm a big believer in not doing a film just for the sake of doing it," she said.

"It has to be the right role, the right people involved, the right director, the right script."

Gale said her ideal role would be something unglamorous.

"Something a bit raw, a bit more exposed," she elaborated, laughing at suggestions that she do a Natalie Portman and be the next actress to shave her head for a part.

Rob Carlton, nominated for playing Kerry Packer in Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo (ABC1), loudly confessed to have found it more daunting portraying a real person.

“It’s terrifying!”

"The one thing we have as actors normally, is that we can say 'It's the character, that's the choice I made'. But when it's somebody who actually existed and who everybody knows?"

Adelaide’s own Xavier Samuel looked dapper as he strode down the red carpet in a classic black suit. Known for his roles in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Anonymous and A Few Best Men, the young star spoke fondly about his hometown.

“I always look forward to coming back to Adelaide and spending time there, lots of my friends and family are still there,” he told Glam Adelaide. “I like to go back home.”

Asked how it felt to go from Adelaide to the AACTAs, he started wise-cracking.

“Yeah, the drive is nice. Via Melbourne, through the countryside…” he quipped, before turning serious.

“I think I’m really privileged and lucky to be in a position to keep doing what I love. I know a whole lot of very talented Australian actors who aren’t working, so I count myself very lucky.”

Samuel’s tendency towards charming sarcasm reared its head again when asked where he would like to see the Australian film industry in the future.

“Still in Australia.”

He was unable to hide a smirk at my protestations that the question was meant metaphorically. “I know!” he laughed. “I think a night like tonight is a real occasion to celebrate Australian film and television having wider recognition and more international recognition. There are a lot of very talented actors and filmmakers here and I think it’s about time we received that recognition.”

The conversation turned to the suit Samuel was wearing, which was made by Louis Vuitton.

“You look lovely, as well,” he added, just before he moved on – turning this reporter almost as red as the carpet.

Actor and director Richard Roxburgh told Glam Adelaide that the public was too eager to attach inaccurate labels to Australian films.

“If you have a year where there’s a lot of comedies, people will say ‘We only ever produce comedies!’ – the next year it will be gloomy films and people say we only ever do those.”

Actress Radha Mitchell said that Australian filmmakers and audiences were privileged in being able to focus on film as art.

“I’m based in America mainly and that’s quite difficult [there] because everyone’s financially constrained,” she told Glam. “We have the opportunity to make movies that register on that level.”

Magda Szubanski said she disagreed with the oft-cited view that local audiences are too unwilling to support local movies. “Australians are big filmgoers,” she said.

“I think we really love seeing our own stories told.”

The AACTA Awards were launched in August last year as a continuum of the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards, which have been celebrating Australian film and television excellence for over half a century.

The classes will run for eight weeks in front of the fountain at the northern end of Victoria Square from 5.40pm to 6.10pm. Zumba will take place every Tuesday starting February 7th and group fitness classes will be every Thursday from February 9th.

Last year the sessions were an overwhelming success, attracting hundreds of participants each week.

“Given the popularity of last year’s trial program, Council looked at options, including ways of partnering with the fitness industry, to help city workers get their fitness fix,” Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said.

“We are thrilled to have Fitness Australia on board with us this year. It’s a great opportunity for people to get their recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day in the heart of the city and best of all it’s free – so there is no excuse not to get out there and get active.”

Both classes will be led by registered exercise professionals from businesses across the city.

“The fitness industry is delighted to be involved with the program this year,” said Joel Perricone from Fitness Australia.

“Over the 8 weeks of the program we are looking forward to showcasing the quality, professionalism and diversity the industry has to offer. Most of all we are excited to be contributing to getting Adelaide active.”

The workouts are suitable for people of all fitness levels, including those just starting out and wanting a little more activity in their days.

Zumba is a fun and exhilarating workout, combining Latin and international music with easy-to- follow dance routines while the group fitness classes will incorporate a variety of cardio, resistance and core exercises.

There is no need to register but participants are asked to turn up to each session 10 minutes early as sessions will start at 5.40pm sharp.

“Uncorked” is the National Wine Centre’s famous after work drinks that are held fortnightly and open to the general public. Perfect for wine connoisseurs and novices alike, Uncorked has become a staple on Adelaide social calendar!

So don’t miss this Friday the 3rd of February, where the return of Uncorked will be kicked off with this fortnights featured winery, Linfield Road! National Wine Centre’s spectacular Gallery Room, located on the first floor, will host “Uncorked with Linfield Road”.

Linfield Road’s vineyard is at the very southern edge of the Barossa, in a cooler area that is elevated above the valley floor. This means Linfield Road has become known for producing elegant reds. Five generations of vineyard owners, the Wilson family have been growing vines and today three generations of the family currently live and work on the property.

All the normal Uncorked delights will be on offer with free entry, complimentary canapés and cheese platters and the chance to meet Daniel Wilson, great-great grandson of Linfield Road founder Edmund Major Wilson*.

(*N.B. Aside from purchase of wine, Uncorked is a free event however guests can opt to attend the ‘Meet the Maker’ session hosted by Daniel Wilson, and taste a flight of five exclusive wines for $20).

Adding to the relaxed atmosphere, live music will be performed by Laidley Poulton who plays a variety of songs from artists ranging from Neil Young and Bob Dylan to Foo Fighters and Powderfinger.

With free entry from 4.30pm, you only need pay for the wine. Uncorked is a party not to be missed as after work drinks don’t get much better than this!

If you can’t make this Friday’s event, make sure you head along to next February’s instalment of Uncorked on Friday, 17th of February where all the fun happens all over again for the next featured winery Skillogalee!
