Sean Heylen, Deadline Managing Director said after 15-years a refreshed brand identity was necessary to move the organisation forward.

“It was timely for us to assess our position within the marketplace and align our brand identity and organisational values to match what we have become,” said Sean.

“Deadline is not your typical website development company; we create custom-made online software tools that power business growth and improve efficiency⎯and we wanted our brand identity to reflect the leading position we hold within the marketplace.”

Deadline partnered with design agency WDM to complete the comprehensive rebranding process.

“It was a strategic decision to collaborate with an external agency because it offered a different perspective which helped us to achieve a refreshed look and feel. The team at WDM did a great job for us,” said Sean.

Progressively rolled out over the last 12-months the new branding, including a new logo, website and office fit out, collectively reflect the specialised services and tools Deadline delivers.

“The new branding represents the online space within which we work in an innovative and contemporary way,” said Sean.

The process has also involved realigning the organisation’s core values. Visual graphics outlining these values are highlighted on the walls of Deadline’s CBD office, reinforcing what the organisation is about.

“Internally we now have excellent clarity about who we are and what we stand for and this has helped us to acquire more clients,” said Sean.

To further support the business’ new identity and repositioning, Deadline has added a Marketing Assistant to its team of 12 staff.

Emily Clark joined the business at the beginning of July and steps into the newly created role to focus on marketing Deadline’s services while also offering a marketing perspective to Deadline clients in strategic planning sessions and during their projects.

Prior to joining Deadline, Emily was Marketing Assistant at Westfield Tea Tree Plaza. This diverse role saw her manage promotional and advertising campaigns, email database acquisition and market research. Emily holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) and a Bachelor of Arts (English).

“With the launch of our refreshed identity, now is the ideal time to bring on board a marketing professional to help further Deadline’s growth,” said Sean.

“Emily will play an integral role within the Deadline team, her professional expertise will also allow us to offer our clients the added value of marketing advice.”

“We are confident that in working with Woods Bagot along with Larry Oltmanns we will ensure an iconic building, not only in terms of design and its relationship with the Riverbank Precinct, but also in terms of operation,” Adelaide Convention Centre Chief Executive, Alec Gilbert, said.

The Woods Bagot, Larry Oltmanns, Baulderstone team undertake the project with an intimate understanding of the Adelaide Convention Centre, having spearheaded the venue’s successful extensions of 2001. Baulderstone has a prestigious track record in the engineering business with successful involvement on the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium.

The expansion will be undertaken in two stages, the first stage consisting of the addition of a new building west towards the Morphett Street Bridge, creating the Morphett Street Boulevard. This will be complete in time to host the estimated 3000 delegates attending the World Aquaculture Conference in May 2014. Capacity expansion for exhibitions will add 4,200 square metres of multipurpose convention floor-space. New pedestrian entrances, meeting rooms and support infrastructure will be added for easy access for everyone from any direction of the city.
The second stage, expected to be complete by late 2016, will replace the original plenary building with a modern, multi-purpose facility including a flexible auditorium for 3000 delegates, which will be able to be subdivided or extended.

Construction will commence in September of this year.
During construction it will be “business as usual” with the venue continuing to deliver its Gold Service Green Attitude, for which it is renowned. “Due to the site characteristics and the staging of building works we anticipate very little disruption and no loss of space,” Mr. Gilbert said.

The Adelaide Convention Centre combines Gold Service with Green Attitude by offering Sustainable Meeting events packages and Carbon Emission offset options for organisers. The Adelaide Convention Centre is the first centre in Australia to achieve EarthCheck Silver Certification for its commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Adelaide City Council is buzzing with a sense of optimism and opportunity according to Councillor Houssam Abiad.

Fresh and revived from the recent council elections, Councillor Abiad, 34, says the energy and enthusiasm in the current council is very exciting.

“There is a great balance of young and old members in the council that will appeal to a large cross section of the community,” said Councillor Abiad.

“The election provided a renewed energy to achieve great things for Adelaide and great opportunities for its constituents.”

Councillor Abiad is looking forward to continuing the relationships he established with the community leading up to the election.

“Just because I’ve been elected, it doesn’t mean the campaigning stops.

“I want to learn from the people of Adelaide and to introduce new platforms that will better engage them.”

With only thirty per cent of voters taking part in the council elections, Councillor Abiad is hoping to increase the number of voters to fifty per cent by the time the next election comes around.

“If we communicate with the younger generation by empowering them as community members, we’ll be able to keep them interested and provide them with a voice.”

Councillor Abiad is hoping to engage the younger generation by actively using social media to address issues as they arrive.

“Social media provides a platform to discuss issues with our constituents and get feedback in real time,” said Councillor Abiad.

“It will provide them with a chance to let us know if they agree or disagree with what we are doing.

“Our purpose as a council is to serve the community and I believe speaking with people, face to face and on a social media platform, will provide a great opportunity to effectively serve the Adelaide community.”

Excited by the prospects Adelaide has to offer, Councillor Abiad is no stranger to hard work, as the Executive Director of no less than four companies.

Telecommunications company Digimob, real estate company Macrovest, strategic marketing company Muscle Group and trendy Rundle St coffee haunt Felici have all provided Councillor Abiad with a unique insight into the competitive advantages of Adelaide.

This coupled with his involvement in community initiatives such as the Australian Refugee Association and the East End Coordination Group mean that he is thoroughly entrenched in the Adelaide community.

“I would never move my businesses from Adelaide with the work life balance an integral appeal for the community,” he said.

“The opportunities that Australia has to offer are endless with Adelaide having benefits that far outweigh Sydney or Melbourne.”

Born in Adelaide but growing up in Lebanon, Councillor Abiad feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to return to Adelaide with his family when he was nineteen.

Enjoying the start up involved in new business and the strategic development, Councillor Abiad is hoping to engage his business sense in council decisions.

“Guiding a business through those initial stages is what appeals to me,” said Councillor Abiad.

“Even though my businesses are in four different areas, the core model and infrastructure is the same across all industries and there’s no reason why that can’t be the same in the council.

Being involved in the council will provide Councillor Abiad with an opportunity to showcase all the passionate Adelaide supporter loves about the city.

“My role as a councilor will be to communicate my enthusiasm for Adelaide to other cities and countries.

“I really want to promote the wonderful city that it is and by doing that, I hope to better serve the community.”

Along with the much-coveted award, however, the Adelaide Convention Centre has also reaped a position in the prestigious Hall of Fame. At the Qantas National Tourism Awards – taking place in Perth early next year – the venue will now vie for the national title for what will be the third year in a row.

Albert Gilbert, the Adelaide Convention Centre’s Chief Executive, claims the prestigious accolade was consequentially thanks to his team and their untiring Gold Service, Green Attitude.

“We offer world-class facilities and maintain exceptional standards, and the efforts of our dedicated staff ensure the consistent deliver of high-quality events.

“Part of the superior product we provide is our commitment to environmental sustainability and we have numerous initiatives in place to reduce our carbon footprint to allow us to provide gold class service while being environmentally responsible,” he said.

The Adelaide Convention Centre plays a pivotal role for tourism – aimed particularly at business travellers – in South Australia. The centre has held over 600 conferences and events in the last year, attracting over 28,000 visitors to the state.

“With conference delegates convening at the Adelaide Convention Centre, millions of dollars are poured into hotels, restaurants, cafes and tourism operator throughout the state each year,” said Mr Gilbert.

“When you consider our outstanding levels of professionalism and service and our commitment to the environment, it’s no wonder that Adelaide is regarded as Australia’s convention city,” he added.

The multi-award-winning Adelaide Convention Centre is widely acknowledged for its excellence, its shining global reputation ranking it amongst many of the the world’s top convention centres. Winner AIPC International Innovation Award for Excellence in Convention Centre Management, Winner Qantas Australian Tourism Awards for Meetings and Business Tourism and Winner Meetings & Events Australia Awards for Best Meeting Venue and Corporate Social Responsibility, there’s certainly no question about the centre’s recent hat-trick.

Patch Theatre Company creates theatre for children aged 4-8 that journeys into worlds of imagination and play. In designing the new corporate identity, Black Squid Design wanted to tickle the child in all of us.

“The logo combines the spontaneity and naivety of a childlike crayon scribble with structured type to reflect the professionalism of Patch Theatre Company’s productions,” said Derek Butler, Managing Director of Black Squid Design.

“The objective was to create a logo that can be placed within an illustration and poster to create a distinctive look and feel for each production without diminishing the prominence of the Patch logo.

“The Patch logo is applied just like a patch on every poster and ad design maintaining consistency across all material however unique and colourful the designs may be. You even enter Odeon Theatre, the home of Patch Theatre Company, through a blue patch that says ‘Hello’.

“Common props in Patch productions are boxes and balls, so we incorporated these elements into the Company’s corporate material including the Repertoire book and website.

“Creating the Patch identity was serious fun. We played with colours, shapes, balls and boxes to see things through the eyes of a child. That experience was invaluable in creating design that talked to children, to commerce, and to the child in all of us. Winning the Gold was a great acknowledgement that we worked well with our client to promote their tremendous work.”

Four of South Australia’s best tourism businesses have been inducted into the State’s Tourism Hall of Fame at the 2010 South Australian Tourism Awards.

Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre, Adelaide Convention Centre, UniSA’s School of Management and Unforgettable Houseboats all received the prestigious inductions at the Adelaide Convention Centre last night after winning their respective categories for the third year in a row.

Chief Executive of the Houseboat Hirers Association, Peter Tucker, was also honoured for his role in tourism, receiving the award for an Outstanding Contribution by an Individual.

With a passion for the houseboating industry, Peter is dedicated to promoting the Murray River as Australia’s most iconic waterway and unifying the industry with cooperative marketing.

More than 620 people attended the black tie event, where 26 awards were presented to businesses and individuals judged to be the most outstanding in each category (full list below).

A further 76 entrants who achieved a high standard in their category were recognised with a gold, silver or bronze medal.

South Australian Tourism Industry Council Chief Executive Ward Tilbrook says a record 184 entries were received this year, highlighting the power a Tourism Awards win can have for a tourism business.

“The standard of entries was extremely high, which underlines the commitment our operators have towards this important industry,” Mr Tilbrook says.

“It has been inspiring to see the commitment that tourism businesses have given to reviewing their goals and achievements through the awards process and showcasing their success to the industry.

“The Tourism Industry Council aims to present the South Australian tourism industry as professional and high quality, and tonight we have seen some of the State’s finest tourism businesses rewarded for excellence.”

The South Australian Tourism Awards are the pinnacle of excellence within the tourism industry; they reward innovation and foster best business practices by setting benchmarks for all tourism operators to aspire to.

The awards are judged in accordance with a strict set of rules and criteria, and winners will represent the State at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in March 2011, to be held in Perth.

Owner and Publishing Editor, Mikyla Gilbert travelled to Sydney to attend the awards held on Darling Harbour. “We are the first publication from South Australia to win a national Publisher’s Australia Excellence award,” said Ms Gilbert. “We’re still on a high!”

Over the past 15 years, the Publishers Australia Excellence Awards have become the leading and most coveted magazine industry awards in Australia. In 2010 the new category of Regional Publication of the Year was introduced to acknowledge the important role of regional publications in communicating with their communities.

One of the judges at the awards ceremony said of the magazine, “Adelaide Hills Magazine is very focused, really addressing its community in an enlightening and entertaining way”.

Another judge called it “A stand out entry”.

The Publishers Australia Excellence Awards 2010 were judged by a team of 14 judges led by managing director of Essence Media & Fusion Strategy, Steve Allen.

The magazine is not yet two years old – launched in Autumn 2009 to reach a broad local readership and a growing national audience with its mix of rich editorial content, stunning images, honest, wit and humour.

AHM is sold throughout South Australia and distributed nationally by Fairfax Media Publication Solutions, and has subscribers all over the country, not to mention UK, Canada and the US.

“I’d love to think this award can help further raise the profile of the Adelaide Hills among potential visitors and investors. It’s a beautiful, exciting region and it’s championed by a magazine that reflects that,” said Ms. Gilbert.

Head judge Steve Allen praised the quality of entries in this year’s Publishers Australia Excellence Awards.

“These awards are the most varied and diverse I have been involved with, which made the judges acutely aware of how different publishers were tackling the marketplace, especially in this last extremely challenging year” said Mr. Allen.

For a full list of winners visit: http://pubaustralia.audienceofone.com.au/awards

Adelaide Hills Magazine will release their 8th edition on Tuesday, January 11.

A printing company that hasn’t used paper in over ten years was among the winners at the 2010 South Australian and Northern Territory Printing Industries and Craftsmanship Awards (PICA) Awards.

Kilkenny based Cutler Brands has won an award for its custom made, screen printing technique that uses liquid glass labels melted directly onto curved wine bottles.

Another standout winner was a reproduction of the Sir Joseph Banks Journal by Hyde Park Press, featuring the original text from the 17th Century scanned onto handmade paper. Judges were required to use gloves to turn pages that were case bound in a clamp-shell box made from brown kangaroo leather.

Other major award winners at the ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel included Fivestar Print, Finsbury Green and Newstyle Printing, who picked up the most awards. All demonstrated digital innovation and the ability to print on any material.

Regional winners included the Barossa’s CCL Clear Image for its McWilliams Philip wine label and Riverland Printers in Berri for their calendar featuring photographs of local landscapes.

Robert Wilson from Detmold Packaging was awarded the LIA Heidelberg Graduate of the Year Award, and James Browne from Multicolour (SA) was awarded the Ian Bowden Future Leader Award.

Mr Peter Mansfield, General Manager of the Printing Industries Association of Australia (PIAA) said that the standard, quality of product and attention to detail of the 300 entries was so high that in some categories, the judging panel awarded multiple awards.

“Every year we are impressed, but this year’s entries really stood out and demonstrated the true art and craft of printing,” Mr Mansfield said.

“Judges paid particular attention to typography, evenness of colour, embellishments and complexity, as well as specialised techniques such as flexographic and screenprinting, foiling and embossing used in the production of labels, books, packaging products and display materials. However, the winners were also able to showcase new processes and reflect the significant technological and behavioural changes the industry has experienced over the past five to ten years, such as reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.”

Mr Mansfield also said that digital technology and innovation was a big winner.

“Digital printing has revolutionised the printing industry as it requires no film, plates or ink, saving the clients time and money, reducing carbon emissions and creating a top quality product,” he said.

“The South Australian and Northern Territory printing industries are undoubtedly leading the nation in terms of the standard of entries that were judged for the awards. This is backed up by the fact that South Australian printers won 22 percent of the total available medals at the Australian National Print Awards in March 2010. The industry in South Australia is renowned for being vibrant, intensely competitive and known for producing innovative and quality work.”

The PIAA is the peak industry body for the print, packaging and visual communications industry in Australia. The Association is an independent, member-based organisation, representing large, medium and small business and has 160 members in South Australia.

There are approximately 400 printing industry businesses in South Australia, employing approximately 3,142 people and generating $511 million in turnover.

As senior partner and musical director of Sydney-based Song Zu Studios, Mark was recently voted as one of Australia’s top four composers with the most works performed overseas. He has received many major awards for music excellence, including Cannes Gold Lions, London International Advertising Awards, Gold Clios and Award Awards.

He will address a crowd of advertisers, designers and musicians as part of the Club’s yearly program, where he will discuss his career and the power of music in the advertising industry.

“When I started out I had some unconventional ideas, I wanted to build a business where specialist composers worked like specialist lawyers in a law firm. 9 to 5, in an office, on a good wage, taking a brief,” Mark said.

“Most composers are wonderfully eccentric and unique which means the company had to reflect that and operate in a unique way.”

Song Zu Studios has been involved with television ad campaigns for many national and international brands, including Coca Cola, Sony, Toyota, Adidas, Panasonic, VISA, Dell and Qantas with its “I still call Australia home” ad.

Song Zu Studios has also worked on film, TV and musical productions, including handling the music editing and programming for Baz Luhrmann’s Australia.

AADC’s Co-President Maggie Harris said the event is a good opportunity for people from the creative industries to learn from an experienced professional.

“We are really pleased that Mark was happy to come and speak, as he is so well respected in the creative and advertising community,” said Maggie.

“Young people starting out, as well as experienced professionals, will really benefit from hearing from someone so accomplished and we encourage anyone to come along.”

To attend the event, which is being sponsored by Adstream, email yvonne.karabatsos@clemenger.com.au or visit www.aadc.com.au.

Location: The Stag Hotel, Rundle Street, Adelaide.

Date: Thursday 14 October 2010.

Time: 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Price: $10 members, $20 non-members and non-RSVPs; also includes a burger and beer.

“Obstacles” encourages motorcycle riders to consider their safety while riding on the roads, rather than treat the road like a motorcycle racing track. The ad shows a rider on a racetrack crashing and skidding into a number of obstacles such as those which exist on the side of real road, including a picnic bench, mailbox and bus. Featuring Moto GP World Champion Mick Doohan, the ad demonstrates that even the world’s best professional motorbike riders would face death or serious injury if they raced on the road.

The award-winning ad can be seen at the Spikes Asia website.
