Carclew emerging curator Craig Robert Middleton presents La Danse Macabre, an exhibition showing in the Carclew Foyer Gallery during November and December 2014.

La Danse Macabre features a collection of approximately 20 pieces showcasing the work of two emerging artists who explore the theme of death in different ways.

Photographic artist Chris Callaghan (24, Goodwood) has an academic background in graphic design, film and television production and in 2012 took a ‘photographic adventure’ through India, exploring photography on an entirely new level.

Julia Townsend (26, Adelaide) majored in oil painting at Adelaide Central School of Art and earlier this year participated in a Figure Painting Intensive with Studio Escalier in Argenton, France.

“Chris and Julia both explore the theme of death in very different ways and through opposing mediums,” said Craig (26, Aberfoyle Park).

“The theme of death has always had an important place in art history and has been interpreted in countless ways to remind us of the inevitability of death and the fragility of life,”

“Death is something that, as humans, we cannot escape, and this exhibition presents just a slice of how diversely Australian contemporary artists explore the human preoccupation with death.”

Carclew’s Foyer Gallery Curator program profiles the work of South Australia’s young and early career visual artists while providing a space for emerging curators to gain experience in artwork selection, coordination and delivery of exhibitions.

La Danse Macabre opens Thursday 13 November, 6 – 8pm and will be showing in the Carclew Foyer Gallery until 8 December.
