Car Review: Subaru Levorg GT-S – Just Wants To Go

Subaru has successfully created a family wagon WRX for all those in my generation wowed by the boy toy rally racers we longed for.

I like cars that go.

It’s a pretty essential part of being a car, after all. Let’s face it, they’re not much good if they don’t go.

So the short and sharp “sales pitch” from Eblen Subaru’s Chrissie on the Subaru Levorg GT-S hit the mark.

“The moment you take your foot off the brake it just wants to go.”

Now, I thought that was both stating the obvious and likely overstating the facts.

I was wrong, on both accounts. The Levorg GT-S does just want to go. There is little holding this one back, it was instantly obvious.

Subaru has successfully created a family wagon WRX for all those in my generation wowed by the boy toy rally racers we longed for.

But this is no stripped back pocket rocket. No, this caters to the wild side of the family leaders – be they dad or mum – and fulfills the needs of the pack with, among other things, a generous 522 litres of cargo space.

The Levorg GT-S hits the road at $48,890 and can be dressed up with a WRX inspired spoiler pack at an extra $4000.

Remember that sales pitch – “It just goes”? Here’s why.

The 2.0-litre turbo charged four cylinder produces 197kW at 5600rpm and, more significantly, 350Nm of torque between 2400-5200rpm, pushing the all-wheel drive along the moment your foot leaves the brake.

And sink the foot onto the go-go pedal and it will go… from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds.

It’s added weight, around 80kg, and the standard Sport Lineartronic CVT auto gearbox, make it a touch slower than the WRX sedan and leaves it slightly off par on fuel consumption with a claimed 8.7L per 100km.

It looks very much old school Subaru WRX for mine, but delivers much elevated comfort over the rally racers of that era. It was also a winner with the family, which I cannot say was the case with the Rex.

But most importantly, and true to Chrissie’s sales pitch, it goes.
