Sinatra recorded over 1000 songs during his long career and there are some that get played a lot more than others, so it is refreshing to hear some gems that don’t get aired very often. Having said that there were no songs that were unfamiliar to me.

Greg Meyer manages to capture the essence of Sinatra’s performance and sounds remarkably like ‘ole blue eyes. Meyer and his backing group opened with Second Time Around and Just One Of Those Things getting everyone in the mood. A beautiful version of Quiet Nights followed and the audience were hooked.

David McEvoy was superb on the piano, giving us an occasional piano solo and providing a strong base for the group. Bob Jeffery’s moody sax helped produce the authentic sound which was reminiscent of Sinatra’s golden years. The backing provided by Tim Bowen on double bass and Ben Riley on drums completed the picture.

The sixteen or so songs performed that night were a good mix of up-tempo numbers and ballads; things like I Get A Kick Out Of You’, Let’s Fall In Love, Nice And Easy and the lilting Moonlight In Vermont. So many great composers were lining up to have Sinatra put his stamp on their songs.

After treating us to the many lesser-known songs, Meyer went for a big finish with Frank’s signature tune My Way – great way to end an enjoyable night.
