A fascinating evening discovering what new talent is emerging on the Cabaret scene! Five young performers have got together and crafted a very entertaining show. They opened with a Queen song Bohemian Rhapsody with slightly altered words, cleverly crafted to introduce the subject of young adulthood, striking out on your own.
All five graduates have the talent to stand-alone and each was given the chance to shine. Jemma Allen’s Corner of the Sky was a stand out – that girl has a big voice and lots of stage presence. Harry Nguyen amused with his version of In Short (almost including audience participation). Mellie Tantalos was at her best with Don’t Rain on My Parade, whilst Naomi Crosby gave us a lovely version of Quiet. Benji Riggs showed his vocal strength in I’m All Over it. They each had two solos, but the group songs gave them a chance to display their harmonies.
Hollywood was a fun number with a serious message relevant to this group and I Need a Hero gave the girls a chance to have fun and really let go. The final numbers showed their strength – more Queen = We Belong and the encore of Somebody to Love. These songs are demanding and were probably a stretch at times, but the overall result was stunning.
Developed under the mentorship of Libby Donovan and musically directed by Mark Ferguson (who was also their accompanist) these five under twenties are definitely performers to watch!
