Country Arts SA’s highly successful annual Visual Arts Professional Development award, Breaking Ground, has opened applications for exhibition in 2015.

Launched in 2012, the award provides a regional South Australian visual artist with a unique opportunity to develop their skills and broaden their professional experience.

The winner will receive $10,000 to develop a body of work for a solo exhibition to be held at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Artspace Gallery in conjunction with the 2015 SALA Festival.

An additional $5,000 mentorship opportunity will be part of the prize.

Chief Executive Officer of Country Arts SA, Steve Saffell, said he is keen to ensure regional artists get a chance to launch their career.

“There are many talented artists in regional South Australia and we want to ensure that those who are serious about expanding and improving their professional knowledge are provided with access to an experienced mentor or network that is best suited to their ambitions.”

The 2013 Breaking Ground recipient, Aleksandra Antic, said the award has given her the time and the scope to fully explore her interest in Ovid’s myth Echo.

“The Breaking Ground award has allowed me to develop an exhibition based on exploring the boundaries of communication,” said Aleksandra. “It has been an invaluable opportunity.”

The 2015 award recipient will be announced at the SALA launch and awards night on 4 July 2014. The works will be exhibited in the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Artspace Gallery in July – August 2015, during the 2015 SALA Festival.

Applications close on 28 May, 2014.

Artists must be a permanent resident of regional South Australia. To download further information and the forms please visit the Country Arts SA website.
