Blu-ray/DVD Review: Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2

Six years after the events of the first film, Paul Blart is invited to Las Vegas for a Mall Security Police conference where a heist puts him to the test again.

There are some movies such as Paul Blart: Mall Cop that make one wonder why they were made – let alone even think about a sequel.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 starts six years after the first but, like its main character, hasn’t matured any: and certainly isn’t funnier, only sillier. After the ‘Black Friday’ incident of the first movie, Paul has become the hero of Mall Security everywhere (at least in his own head).  He has re-married (for all of six days) and lost his mother in a tragic milk-truck accident (not the only tragic thing about this movie).  This all happens in the first five minutes – if only the rest of the film went by as fast!

Blart is invited to Las Vegas for a Mall Security Police conference and takes his daughter along; supposedly so that she can fall in love with a parking attendant, stumble on a valuable art heist and be kidnapped. The plot has so many holes in it, it’s a wonder the actors (for want of a better word) don’t fall through them – although it might be better if they did.

PaulBlart-blurayCould someone please tell this bemused reviewer why a casino would have so many valuable works of art in the one place; and why, when people are shooting guns and running amok with segways in a popular hotel lobby, no-one takes a blind bit of notice?

There is really no acting of any note in this so-called comedy – if little old ladies being punched in the stomach and people locked in suitcases falling down stairs can be considered funny.

Kevin James proves once again, as he did with the first movie, that he is more comfortable on the small screen in television sit-coms such as The King Of Queens, or among bigger, funnier stars, as in Grown Ups. James is just not funny. He makes the character of Blart a jerk, rather than a lovable jerk.

If you enjoyed the first film (and apparently some did), then you may get the odd chuckle out of this – otherwise it’s probably more entertaining to go down to the local K-Mart and watch their security guards.

If there is a God of movies, there won’t be a Paul Blart: Mall Cop 3.
