DVD Review: Mythica: A Quest for Heroes

This first of three films sees slave girl Marek escapes her owner and embark on an epic quest to free a beautiful priestess’ sister from a vicious ogre.

Mythica: A Quest for Heroes is the first film in a three-part series which successfully combines fantasy, action and adventure to produce a movie that, in some ways, is reminiscent of Lord of the Rings (but on a lower budget).

Marek is a slave girl with a twisted foot and a natural ability for magic dreams of adventure. She accidentally uses her magic to defend herself and escape her owner. Gojun Pye, a wizard who has been teaching her elementary spells, tells her to head to the local inn and ask for a man called Hammerhead. While there she meets a beautiful priestess named Teela who is in need of help to rescue her sister after their village was destroyed by a hoard of orcs and an ogre. They recruit Thane a soldier and Dagen a thief to aid them in their quest and set off.

Mythica1-QuestDVDMy only disappointment watching this movie was the monsters – the ogre’s movements were not always smooth and he was clumsily rendered. The spiders tend to look fake, however the wolf is particularly well done.

The acting on the other hand is certainly not a disappointment. Melanie Stone as Marek is vulnerable and yet brave enough to save the day when the situation demands. She perfects a very convincing disability (twisted foot) which she maintains consistently throughout the film.

Kevin Sorbo as Gojun Pye alternates between gruff indifference and an eventual loyalty to Marek and the mission. He provides the wisdom and sanity in the unlikely trio of adventurers. Well known as Hercules, it is refreshing to see him in a more complex role.

Jake Stormoen as Dagen, the romantic thief, has the swagger and good looks to make his character believable and provides a lot of the comedy.

I found Nicola Posener as Teela the priestess somewhat wooden. Her acting remained on one level. Adam Johnson as Thane the soldier completes the troop.

Mythica was an enjoyable movie with an engaging storyline and pace which is pleasing because fantasy films sometimes become bogged down with special effects. This one concentrated on the plot and acting.

I look forward to seeing the next two films in this series!
