It’s no doubt that you’ve heard the odd person – okay, more than a few people – complain about the fact that there is nothing good in Adelaide. But this could not be any further than the truth, especially when it comes to everyone’s favourite past time, having a cheeky drink.
Whether it’s after work on a Friday or in the hopes of meeting some fabulous people, bars are a staple in Adelaide’s nightlife. There are endless choices for whatever day of the week you might decide that you need a good cocktail or casual drink.
From some brand new bars to an East End staple with some favourites in between, here are some places that are definitely worth a try.
The Curious Squire
Arguably one of the hottest spots to open in Adelaide in recent weeks, The Curious Squire is sure to become a household name in no time. Perched on the edge of North Adelaide, it’s a new favourite for after-work drinks and a mouthwatering bar (and dinner) menu.
Of course, the James Squire beer is a staple but their drinks menu is extensive and offers something for everyone (a personal favourite is the Orchard Crush Apple Cider). Team this up with buffalo wings and the delectable onion rings (or maybe a deep-fried Oreo if you're feeling ambitious) and you’ve got a perfect combination for Friday’s knock off. You can also sit in the restaurant section and have a nice meal. But why would anyone want to when they have one of the most enviable beer gardens in Adelaide?
Mr Kim’s
If there was one word to describe the newest addition to Crippen Place, it would be kitsch. Decked completely in stereotypical Asian paintings and ornaments, they’ve really played into the legend that the building used to be owned by a little Chinese man named Mr Kim – think ceramic lions, oriental woodwork and a mesmerising aquarium.
Along with the great look, they also have an amazing cocktail menu (try the Double Happiness, you won’t regret it) and knowledgeable bar staff who can whip up the poison of your choice.
Thursdays and Saturdays see Mr Kim’s transformed into an R&B/hip-hop/alternative dancing ground to contrast with Electric Circus’ electro/house crowd. Fridays are a little more laidback so if you want to pop in for the drink and a sit down, this might be the best day but do expect a younger crowd.
Botanic Bar
An oldie but a goodie, Botanic is an East End staple for those looking for somewhere to start their night. Take a seat in the cushy leather and velvet booths and you'll be enticed to stay a little longer, maybe play a game of pool or just enjoy the chat in the dimly lit, tea light candle atmosphere.
Open from 5pm each night, they offer a great bar menu (try the chilli fries and a $6 pizza) in conjunction with the amazing drinks. Extending beyond your average wine and beer, you might be lucky enough to catch a special brew they’ve just gotten in or try the new exotic cocktail the lovely bar staff have concocted and served to you in a tiki bowl. But their biggest hit and definitely worth a try is the sangria (white or red – your choice), you won't be able to resist it.
Public
On your average weekday, Franklin Street’s newest addition offers breakfast from 7am and a full kitchen menu for lunch but it is only open late on Friday nights. Did I hear someone say ultra-exclusive after work drinks? The space is a mixture of modern and old school, which is perfect for someone who’s looking for somewhere cool but also relaxed to wind down.
Whether it’s a glass of wine you’re after or a cute cocktail, Public has got you covered. Throw in a mini Wagyu beef burger with some triple cooked hand cut chips and your Friday night is perfect. Walk-ins are welcome, in fact, encouraged if you want to hang out at the bar but you also have a choice of sitting in the restaurant section to enjoy the mains they offer.
Udaberri
Nestled in Adelaide’s coolest laneway (Leigh Street), Udaberri offers the dedicated fans of a beer a place to congregate. We’re not talking about your average bottled beers, we’re talking different and unusual kegs being tapped every week and something new on offer every time you visit.
The warehouse-feel and relaxed atmosphere draws pretty big crowds on Fridays and Saturdays so do try to head in early if you’re after a little slice of ultra-cool beer heaven. They’ve also got a pretty neat bar menu which changes once every so often but expect skewers, cured meats and maybe some oysters as well.
Closed Sunday and Monday but open from 4pm each day, it’s perfect for a late afternoon session (minus the questionable crowd you might find at your average pub). And if you’re lucky enough to catch them on certain days, they’re open from 12pm to team up with Adelaide’s favourite food truck, Burger Theory.
