Beauty and the Bastard: A Spoonful of Disney – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

With a simple backdrop of the show’s name in sequins, the double bass player Shannon Haritos enters with a harmonica, starting the tune for the first song.  She is accompanied by Nicola Ossher on percussion and finally the lead singers and guitarists James Edgar Francis and Maxine Kauter.

Francis and Kauter take Disney favourites and give them a country blues twist. They build a loose back story to link the songs, exchanging a free flowing dialogue between themselves.

Whilst this is listed as cabaret music, it falls more within the music genre, missing the cabaret connection with the audience. Very little of the patter makes the audience want to emotionally invest in either the performers or the story and the singers avoid eye contact with their audience but, from a music view point, these are clever rearrangements, taking the bright shiny Disney songs and giving them a darker, moodier treatment.

If you want to hear Disney songs from a grown up mindset, where you realise that life isn’t a fairytale, this is the show for you.
