Beating The Odds To Reach The Australian Masters Games

The 2015 Australian Masters Games are kicking off in Adelaide this weekend, celebrating inspirational 30+ year old athletes and their achievements.

The Australian Masters Games are kicking off this weekend, and plenty of inspirational Australians over 30 will be participating.

Patricia Lewis from Campbelltown, NSW, dislocated both arms in 2009, survived a heart attack on Mother’s Day in 2013, and was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer in 2014. Yet, none of this will stop the 56-year-old from competing in her fourth Australian Masters Games.Lewis’ admirable passion for sport, and her determination to overcome adversity, have brought her this far.

Almost six years ago Lewis dislocated both arms, and snapped both her shoulders and biceps in a workplace accident. As a result she was told by doctors she may never be able to swim again, let alone participate in any throwing events.

Nevertheless, from this Saturday, Lewis will be competing in Adelaide at the 15th Australian Masters Games. It’s a chock-a-block schedule for her too, having signed on for all freestyle swimming events, the 2000m steeplechase, hammer throw, shot put, javelin, discus and weight throw.

Bathursts’ Geoff Hawkins is another inspirational tale to come out of the Masters Games; Geoff will be the oldest cyclist at next week’s 15th Australian Master’s Games, at 86-years-young. Cycling has helped him through the good and bad times in his life, including five bouts of cancer. Has Geoff let this stand in the way of his cycling? Not at all.

You can see the likes of Patricia, Geoff, and ten thousand others participate in the 15th Australian Masters Games will be held in Adelaide, October 3-10th, participants coming to the event from not only Australia, but all over the world. There are 49 different sports to watch, widely ranging from athletics to dragon boating.
