The Royal Adelaide Show is calling on South Australians to help them beat their all-time record for competitive entries in the Society’s 175th year.

The 2013 Show entered the record books after receiving 31,280 entries across 61 sections and organisers are hoping to smash this achievement in 2014.

Royal Show general manager Michelle Hocking said the number of competitive entries had increased steadily over the past five years, with many younger and first-time entrants trying their luck.

“Considering South Australia’s population base we are extremely proud of the number of entries the Royal Adelaide Show receives annually, we boast one of the strongest competitive sections of any capital city Show,” says Ms Hocking.

“With 2014 being the 175th anniversary of the Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society we would love to break the record again and maintain this title.

“From cooking, craft and horticulture to photography, pets, robotics and reptiles, there really is a section for everyone.

“There are cash prizes up for grabs in most categories and many of the prize-winning entries go on display for the duration of the Show, which offers great bragging rights for show-goers!”

Ms Hocking said anyone is eligible to enter the competitive sections, regardless of past experience, club memberships or awards. All entrants in 2014 will also be able to purchase a commemorative medallion in recognition of the Society’s 175th.

“Many of our prize winners have been entering their categories for a long while which is fabulous, however we encourage budding entrants to try and knock them off their perch,” she said.

“The cookery section has enjoyed a real renaissance in recent years with many people keen to pit their wares against fellow home cooks, while the craft section has received a boost thanks to the growing popularity of ‘granny’ skills.

“It’s also been great to see more city-based and younger people entering the competitions, including the many hundreds of school children who enter the art and technology sections.”

All competitive sections are now open for entries, with most closing in June and July. For more information visit www.theshow.com.au and click on ‘Competitions’.
