Be A Tourist In Your Own City

Adelaide City Council is encouraging locals to be a tourist in their own city with a new website where people can download an itinerary to explore all that the city has to offer and discover new experiences.

Unless you’re on the Glam Adelaide website everyday (and we hope you are) or getting our daily eNewsletter with a run down of the headlines, it can be difficult keeping up with all the amazing things happening in little ol’ Adelaide. The city and surrounds are buzzing with new businesses, events, reinvented classics, and things to explore. The explosion in street art alone is a great reason to head out to our city’s streetscape, to explore what all the fuss is about.

Luckily for us, there’s a new website which dishes up a city itinerary, which gives you the low down on exploring all that the city has to offer, while discovering new experiences.

The site has information about what there is to do at low cost or for free in the city and reminds people of all those hidden treasures. The itineraries include ideas on how to explore, indulge, go on an adventure or just relax.

Acting Lord Mayor Megan Hender said locals and visitors alike were often surprised at how much there is to do in the city that won’t break the bank.

“There are the well-known places to visit – the Central Market, Rundle Mall, Rundle Street and North Terrace which offer many low cost and free activities.

“There are also many not-so-well-known places to see – the tunnels under the Treasury, the kitchen garden at the Botanic Gardens, the Jam Factory, Adelaide Gaol, not to mention all the laneways and side streets with their unique businesses, such as Compton Street, Leigh and Peel Streets and Sturt Street for example.

“And not forgetting the many pockets of the Park Lands to explore, museums and art galleries to visit, the North Adelaide Golf Club and Aquatic Centre, the street art loop – there’s plenty for everyone to do, day and night, no matter your budget, age or interests. And if you’re coming into the city for a game at Adelaide Oval, or for work or an appointment, why not find out what else there is to do and stick around?

“We want to remind people of all the special and unique things to see and do in the city and encourage visitors to try new experiences – there truly is plenty to see and do.”

By being a tourist in their own city, visitors can go into the draw to win one of the weekly prizes and also go into the draw to win the major prize for best entry. They simply need to take a photo or short video of themselves and/or their mates experiencing the city as a tourist, share on Facebook or Instagram, and tag @CityofAdelaide and use the hashtag #beatouristadl #myadelaide. The competition runs from 4 April until 6 May. Prizes have been kindly donated by Adelaide Festival Centre, State Theatre Company, Mayfair Hotel, North Adelaide Golf Course, Aquatic Centre, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide Central Market and more.

There are several ways to get around the city. Walking is easy and many places are within walking distance. Or hire an Adelaide Free Bike from any of the 21 locations across the city and North Adelaide, or hop on the free City Connector. There are also many UParks dotted throughout the city, many with flat weekend and evening rates.
