Bakers Delight bakeries in South Australia will donate $1 from every six-pack of hot cross buns sold to raise over $10,000 towards funding the purchase of a neonatal hearing screening unit.

The Women’s and Children’s Health Network (WCHN) provides a Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening service that sees every newborn baby in South Australia undergo a free hearing check within hours of birth. The program aims to ensure that any hearing problems are detected as early as possible, allowing for appropriate treatment and intervention.

WCHN Senior Paediatric Audiologist Levana Latisenka, said, “About 1-2 babies per 1000 births are born with a permanent hearing loss, and equipment such neonatal hearing screening units assist in early detection. We are grateful for the fundraising support to help ensure children have access to these vital services.”

A recent recipient of the test is Lachlan who was recently born at the WCH, and mum Tracy is grateful for the support provided by the hospital; “As new parents we were relieved when Lachlan’s hearing test showed a positive reading. It’s reassuring to know that his hearing is healthy for the very important early years.”

Michael Morris, Bakers Delight South Australia Regional Manager added; “Easter is by far our busiest time of the year, so it’s a great opportunity to give back to the WCH Foundation and make a difference to the lives of children,” said Michael.

“We encourage all our customers to make their hot cross bun purchase count on Saturday 5 April.”

For 34 years Bakers Delight bakers have been baking fresh hot cross buns from scratch, each day in the lead up to Easter. This year will be no different with Bakers Delight providing Traditional, Choc Chip and Fruitless varieties.
