Australia Is A Staycation Nation

HotelQuickly

Staycations have never been a better option for Australian travellers due to the plummeting dollar and an impressive summer line up of events. HotelQuickly, the popular last-minute hotel-booking app, reveals that staycations are indeed at an all time high, with 80% of current bookings being made for domestic travel.

Did you know:

  • 80% of hotel bookings made are for domestic travel
  • Thursday nights are the most popular for bookings implying Australian’s love a three day weekend
  • Australians love luxury, with 4* and 5* hotels the most popular choices for last minutes getaways
  • Melbourne is the most popular city to book a last-minute hotel in Australia

Aussies are also becoming more spontaneous with their holidays, with more and more of us heading away for last-minute trips and making the most of our weekends. Data from HotelQuickly shows there’s been a huge demand for Thursday night bookings, a night not nearly as popular with the rest of the Asia-Pacific suggesting that Aussies in particular love taking a long weekend.

Not only are Australians more likely to have a long weekend, but they’re doing it in style too. 63% of bookings made by Australian’s are for 4 star properties, while the rest of Asia-Pacific chooses the slightly lower end of the scale, opting for the three-star properties.

Unsurprisingly given sporting events like the Australian Open, Melbourne Cup and Grand Prix, Melbourne takes the crown for the most popular city when it comes to booking a last-minute hotel.

“Australians are known as a nation of people who love to travel and explore, and it’s great to see that they’re choosing destinations closer to home and making the most out of their ‘staycations’. Planning travel weeks or months ahead is no longer a practical or enjoyable option for many of us. Time is precious so being able to book a hotel from your phone, knowing that you’re not sacrificing price or quality, can make travel easier. It can also change your weekend for the better at the touch of a button.”- Co-founder Christian Mischler
