Announcement For The Upgrade Of Hajek Plaza Appears Imminent

After much conjecture regarding the future of The Festival Plaza, it appears that an announcement is coming the week regarding a $1 billion co-investment for the space.

After much conjecture regarding the future of The Festival Plaza and ongoing development of the Riverbank Precinct opposite Adelaide Oval, it appears that four years of conversation between the State Government and Sydney based developers Walker Corporation are about to bear fruit.

Reports have emerged suggesting an announcement will be made this week that frames the future of the current Hajek Plaza space and underground car park, with the overall value of the project estimated to be close to $1 billion, a cost to be shared between the State Government and Walker Corporation.

The proposal on the Walker Corporation website boasts the project as “reviving the heart of Adelaide city to create a destination that will become one of the world’s most exciting public spaces.”

A multi-story 6 Green Star twin tower commercial and retail development is being projected for the space behind the old Parliament House, with cafes, restaurants and luxury retail outlets to sit alongside commercial offices. A new car park (because we love our car parks in Adelaide) will also feature, accommodating 1,500 spaces. The design is said to be inspired by famous international squares such as Plaça Catalunya in Barcelona and Leicester Square in London.

With the Adelaide Convention Centre’s renovation nearing completion, as well as the Adelaide Casino announcing a proposed hotel development for their site, it appears we will soon be able to enjoy plenty more construction action along the riverbank as Adelaide’s future unfolds before our eyes.

The Walker Corporation website states that project will commence in 2016 and is expected to be complete in 2019. We’ll now hold our breath this week as we await confirmation from the State Government that the green light has been given.
