Andrew Jackson Jihad Announce New Album ‘Christmas Island’

Andrew Jackson Jihad have a way with words. That’s pretty obvious from their near endless catalogue of songs like ‘The Michael Jordan of Drunk Driving’ and ‘Love in the Time of Human Papillomavirus’. But on their new album, Christmas Island, the Phoenix folk-punk weirdos seem intent on upping their eccentric lyric game.

Set for release on May 9, Christmas Island covers topics like Man Is The Bastard, rocking out in your dreams, and Linda Ronstadt.

The band created the album, their fifth LP, with Grammy nominated producer John Congleton (Anna Calvi, The Polyphonic Spree, Erykah Badu, The Roots) in June 2013. It’s a little bit silly and a little bit serious, full of sad humour and hilarious pathos. Because Christmas Island – it’s far from a random title, but it’s also kind of a secret – is simultaneously ridiculous and sublime in the way that Andrew Jackson Jihad always have been. It’s a record absolutely in keeping with their bold and brilliant past – the one their cult following has been following for years – but it’s also a bold and brilliant step forward.

New single ‘Children of God’ in particular is a jaw-dropper. In two minutes, the song not only captures everything that’s great about the album, but serves as a microcosm for the brilliant absurdity that is Andrew Jackson Jihad – just the right mixture of poetic wit and tongue-in-cheek humour. ‘Children Of God’ is currently streaming on Noisey – listen here.

The band commissioned Suzanne Falk to create the eye-catching album cover – a painting of a diorama she and singer/guitarist Sean Bonnette made together. The title of the painting is “Everything we were ever looking for was there all along”.

Andrew Jackson Jihad have just wrapped up European tour dates with Frank Turner.
