Ali McGregor’s Alchemy – 2012 Adelaide Fringe

This year marks Ali McGregor’s 6th year performing at the Adelaide Fringe with her new show ‘Ali McGregor’s Alchemy’.

Ali takes us on a 1 hour journey through the songs that made her want to kiss boys when she was growing up. She kicks off with Tainted Love which is one of the most covered songs in history, but follows with a wonderfully unexpected and surprising show performing songs from artists including JT and INXS. She warns us that the songs are trashy, the type that make her band groan when they hear the set list, but we thought they’d never sounded so good!

Ali was engaging and funny, and completely absorbing in her performance. Her versatile voice showing off her opera singing and burlesque days; sexy, smooth and powerful complemented beautifully by the drums, double bass and keyboard behind her.

There were several highlights during the show, but for me it was a Foo Fighters song that she absolutely made her own; channelling the love, pain and anguish I hardly even knew existed in the lyrics.

The Spegeltent made for a great little space, although the show would have suited a slightly later, darker, trashier cabaret style timeslot. A great way to begin your evening at the Garden tonight though, but hurry, it’s the final show!
