MTV Australia have announced the launch of the first ever MTV Brand New competition down under and there is a South Australian in the mix!

Adelaide’s reply to Iggy Azalea, Tkay Maidza, who is gearing up to perform at the Splendour In The Grass, is one of the ten artists who have made it to the shortlist.

The 19 year old, rapping prodigy is already making waves throughout the music industry and this will only boost her already growing profile.

The competition allows the public to vote online for their favourite emerging Aussie or Kiwi act, whilst MTV gives the artists the support and exposure they need to break through onto the music charts and make it big in the industry.

The competition follows on from the continued success of MTV Brand New in the UK, which put popular artists such as Sam Smith, Florence and the Machine, Adele, Jessie J, Charli XCX and most recently James Bay, onto the international scene.

“MTV have been so supportive of me, I was super excited to be a part of MTV Brand New back in 2012 when I was just starting out. It’s really important to champion new music and new artists early on, so I think it’s great that MTV Brand New can act as a platform for such incredible talent,” says Charli XCX

Music fans can visit mtv.com.au/brandnew to view video clips and interviews with the artists before casting their vote for their favourite emerging star, either online or via Twitter using the hashtag #MTVbrandnew followed by the artists name.

The competing artists will battle it out over ten weeks beginning July 6, with voting closing September 13. The winner will be announced on-air on MTV, MTV Music and MTV Dance in Australia, and MTV and MTV Hits in New Zealand.

Nominee spotlight interviews will also be featured on-air across the MTV channels over the duration of the competition. The competition will conclude with a winner showcase event taking place in Sydney in September, with special performances from the winner and select acts.

MTV have partnered with music labels across Australia and New Zealand to find the best ten up-and-coming artists, selected by an expert panel of MTV judges, to take part in the competition.

“We’re extremely excited to launch MTV Brand New down under in Australia and New Zealand after the huge success that the competition has experienced in the UK,” said Simon Bates, Vice President of MTV Australia & New Zealand.

“We have an absolute killer line-up of talent, which we can’t wait to introduce to our audiences via our MTV platforms online and on-air. As the world’s premiere youth entertainment brand available in 160+ countries and with a massive combined social footprint of more than 300 million, with over 3 million here in Australia, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to provide support and exposure to these talented artists and watch them achieve huge success in the music industry.”
