Do you have a favourite building in the City, North Adelaide or the Park Lands?

As part of About Time: South Australia’s History Festival, Adelaide City Council is asking city residents, students, workers and visitors to submit their favourite buildings and by doing so, they’ll go in the running to win an Apple iPad mini.

Adelaide City Councillor Sandy Wilkinson said this fun initiative was a great way to showcase the historically and architecturally significant buildings in the City of Adelaide.

“From grand churches to corner pubs, funky warehouses to some of its notable modern buildings or some of its hidden ‘little gems’; much of Adelaide’s character and charm can be seen in its beautiful buildings that stand today,” Councillor Wilkinson said.

“Adelaide was a free founded and wealthy city when it was substantially built in Victorian times, and today has a relatively intact legacy of magnificent stone historic buildings that we could not afford to build today, compared to other cities.

“This initiative encourages people to stop, look around, and appreciate the buildings that make Adelaide the envy of other cities.”

People can either submit their favourite building (which must be still standing) or simply vote for buildings submitted by others.

Councillor David Plumridge said that Adelaide is full of unique buildings that often go unnoticed.

“In the City of Adelaide there are many different styles and eras of architecture, from Colonial, Victorian and Federation through to Art Deco, Postwar and Modern,” Councillor Plumridge said.

“We want to know what your favourite buildings within the City of Adelaide are. Whether they are big, small, old or new, we might all discover some gems we didn’t know were there!”

Submissions and voting are open from 9am on the 1 May and close at 5pm on the 31 May (terms and conditions apply).

Submissions can be made:

  • Online – via the submission form located at www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/great-buildings
  • Instagram – via #GreatBuildings #Adelaide and using the ‘name the location’ function
  • Email – via [email protected]  – submissions are limited to one building per email
  • Voting Forms – located in the Planning Lab at Council’s Customer Centre, 25 Pirie Street, Adelaide. Upon request, voting forms can also be send via post

Voting can be done via:

In June, the submissions will be collated and the votes tallied. A final list of buildings will be selected by a panel of experts (appointed by Adelaide City Council) based on the public’s submissions and votes.  This list will showcase examples of the City of Adelaide’s wonderful architecture from the earliest structures to the most recent.

The final list will be publicised at various stages of the year via a photo gallery, web page and walking brochure for people to see, explore and discover Adelaide’s beautiful buildings.

The Adelaide City Council would like to recognise and thank its supporters; Australian Institute of Architects (SA Chapter), History SA, National Trust of South Australia, Office for Design and Architecture SA, University of Adelaide and University of South Australia.
