Tianyou-MaAdelaide Youth Orchestra launched their 2014 Maestro Series on Sunday 30 March, filling Elder Hall with the symphonic sounds of what promises to be a wonderful season.

Conducted by Keith Crellin and with a solo performance by Tianyou Ma, AdYO’s first Maestro series for 2014 included three diverse works, including Dvořák’s much loved American symphony From the New World.

13-year-old violinist Tianyou Ma, who has recently won a scholarship to study at the internationally renowned The Yehudi Menuhin School in England, gave an outstanding performance with a perfection in his art form well beyond his years.

The 80-piece orchestra of the finest young musicians in South Australia did not fail to impress and inspire, proving why they receive consistently high critical acclaim and a have a growing audience base.

The orchestra, impeccable and flawless under the guidance of Crellin, who recently received the City of Adelaide’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award, performed Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man.

With colossal percussion and tremendous crescendos, Fanfare for the Common Man was majestic, powerful and exciting.

Camille Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No 3 in B minor was magical, dynamic and moving with Tianyou Ma breathing life into it with his seamless and mesmerising solo performance.

After interval, Antonin Dvořák’s rhythmic and graceful symphony, From the New World, continued the excellence of the evening, however it was most distracting to have the houselights up for the entire second act because the technician failed to take the lights down when the orchestra began.

If Maestro Series 1 – New World Order is anything to go by, the remainder of the series will be exquisite and a must-see.

The next performance in the series will be in mid-June and will see AdYO collaborate with the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra to perform Mahler’s grandiose and lyrical Symphony No 1, Titan.
