Adelaide Trials New Street Lights, Makes Film Noir About Them Just Because

We’ve become so conditioned by dry bureaucratic attempts to promote our CBD over the years it seems a little bizarre when they really hit the nail on the head and show a sense of humour.

With Adelaide the home of a number incredible independent film makers, it’s always pleasing to see our governance taking cues from the industry when it comes to campaigns. In fact we’ve become so used to dry bureaucratic attempts to promote our CBD over the years it seems a little bizarre when they really hit the nail on the head and show a sense of humour.

Case in point the decision by the Adelaide City Council brainstrust to choose a Film Noir theme to introduce their current trial of ‘Smart’ LED street lights that automatically dim when not required and harvest light from other sources to save power.

A strip of 64 of these lights is currently being tested along Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square in the CBD. As you walk along at night expect to see lights ahead operating at a lower level until a pedestrian or vehicle approaches, when motion sensors on the side of the lights adjust it to full strength.

It’s an Australian first trial to test whether the system will be feasible across Adelaide, and is also tracking the traffic along Pirie Street in the evenings for Adelaide City Council to learn more about our evening foot traffic. The trial began on May 16 and will last for five weeks. Here’s hoping the dry wit of our lonely detective is cover enough from the miserable winter that seems to be setting in.
