Fret not, art lovers! Adelaide Town hall have decide to extend their incredibly successful SALA exhibition featuring artists Aida Azin and Emmaline Zanelli, into November. The two exceptional local talents explore relationships on both a personal and global scale as part of Mother,Tongue, from the intimacy of human touch to contact with heritage and homeland.
Held in the Adelaide Town Hall Level 1 Foyer as part of the 2016 South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival, Mother, Tongue presents an examination of what it means to connect.
The exhibition is curated by Joanna Kitto as part of the Adelaide City Council’s Emerging Curator Program, which engages a recent curatorial arts graduate of contemporary visual arts and crafts to further support their professional pathway and applied development. The program enables an emerging curator the opportunity to undertake professional curatorial programming within the iconic Adelaide Town Hall gallery and the new City art space, Art Pod.

Aida Azin is an Adelaide-based artist who works predominantly in the mediums of drawing and painting, at times incorporating screen-printing, photography and collage. Her work depicts protest, society, identity and her connection to her Filipino-Iranian background. The culture and individuality within youth culture allows for self-expression and the celebration of difference. Language and text is layered across her work, reminiscent of messages of protest and tags textured across street walls. The fluid movements, colour, and intensity of graffiti inspire Azin’s creative approach and process in her studio practice. Travels abroad, collecting experiences through photographs and drawings, are referenced in Azin’s work.
Emmaline Zanelli is an Adelaide-based artist whose practice explores the absurdity and sensuality in human interactions. Zanelli translates these interactions by encoding people in objects, and events in processes. Actions of assemblage and destruction are used to interrogate people intimately and physically with curiosity and playful irreverence, whilst ensuring the artist is entirely removed and private. She uses an experimental working process where sculpture and photography are messed with, merged and layered- the photograph becomes an object, the object becomes a sitter. Zanelli’s images play with ideas of privacy, power, connection and sexuality.
