A small yet elite group of arts enthusiasts assembled in the unlikely venue of Lexus of Adelaide on a Tuesday evening to celebrate the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra 2016 season, their 80th anniversary year.
During cocktail hour, guests were treated to live music courtesy of the ASO’s own harpist Suzanne Handel and concertmaster Natsuko Yoshimoto. The ethereal music resonated around the showroom – evoking what must surely be Eiji Toyoda’s idea of heaven.
Speakers included Chair of the Board, Colin Dunsford; General Manager for Lexus of Adelaide, Drew Ford; and Minister for the Arts, Hon Jack Snelling. Mr Snelling described the ASO as the “jewel in our cultural crown”.
Nicholas Carter will champion the ASO once again in 2016 as Principal Conductor – beginning in February, with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Wagner’s Die Walküre Act I. Continuing this grandiose theme, the ASO will perform Beethoven’s inimitable Symphony no. 5 in March, Mahler’s Symphony no. 6 in July, and Brahms’ Symphony no. 3 in October, among other classical gems.
The 2016 season will bring a focus on world-class music, performed with world-class musicians. The high calibre of soloists attracted to work with the ASO was a key feature throughout the evening. Guest soloists will include Dejan Lazić, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Behzod, Nelson Freire, and Tasmin Little. Other guests will include Jeffrey Tate as Principal Guest Conductor and Pinchas Zukerman, who will join the ASO as Artist in Association for three special performances in November.
The popular Art Talks series will continue, as will the Matinee performances. The ASO will join forces with presenter Guy Noble for Classics Unwrapped, and renowned jazz performers Adam Page and Julian Ferraretto for the “genre-busting” Gigs at Grainger. 2016 will also see an enchanting selection of Family Shows, including Peter Combe & the ASO and The Gruffalo.
