The unmistakable screams of Formula One cars, first heard piercing the Adelaide air 30 years ago, will be back in late November as part of the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.
The Victoria Park Circuit plays host to three Formula One stars from the “gritzy” (grit and glitz) Adelaide Grand Prix era from 1985-1995.
Hitting Victoria Park in cars they drove back in that day will be the suave Swede Stefan Johansson, hard working Italian Ivan Capelli and his fellow countryman Pier Luigi Martini.
Joining them on the tarmac for the November 19 and 20 event will be eight F1 machines.
Johannson will pilot one of two 1985 Ferrari F1 cars in up to four sessions on-track over the weekend while Martini will shake things up in his 1989 Minardi that qualified third in Adelaide in the same year which Capelli retired from the event in his distinctive Aqua coloured Leyton House March.
Capelli will be reunited with the Leyton House for the Adelaide event as they relive the Golden Years of Formula One on a specially prepared, shortened version of the original Adelaide Grand Prix track.
As Adelaide comes alive with the sounds of classic motorsport again, the “museum-in-motion” will continue to unfold on the Victoria Park Circuit and with static displays in the city’s home of racing.
Fourteen 5-Litre Touring cars and a number of Heritage Touring cars are also expected at the event which last year boasted 238 Competing vehicles in 17 different categories – and attracted crowds in the tens of thousands.
The weekend event caps off a huge week of classic motorsport with the Classic Adelaide Rally returning to the Adelaide Motorsport Festival schedule for this year’s event.
The combination of millions of dollars worth of machinery and the sights and sounds of motorsport synonymous with Adelaide and South Australia will provide plenty to get your motor running.
