This Friday night at Adelaide’s Blackmarket, four piece Kiwi turned Sydney-siders Monte will rock the house.
In what they’re calling a whirlwind ‘mini tour’, the band will be giving audiences a taste of their album which is set to be released around October third.
Having toured most of Australia in their four-year career, band member Ben McNulty said Adelaide is one of their favourite destinations.
“We played at Enigma Bar one time we were in Adelaide and we were blown away because we were a support band with no profile but the whole room watched us. That wouldn’t happen in Sydney.We came away from that Adelaide gig really psyched because we played to a great room of people who actually wanted to watch. Adelaide shows are always the best in the tour because Adelaide audiences genuinely come out to watch music,” he said.
The new single, the third released off the album is called ‘Reminiscence’ and is pproduced by Samuel K (Gatherer, Shihad, Bodyjar). The song presents a story of raw emotion felt at the end of a complicated relationship, balanced with a hopeful outlook on moving forward. McNulty said working with Samuel K was an incredible experience, not just because they were friends but because of Sam’s ethereal presence.
“We knew Sam the producer from back in Wellington because I dated his sister at school,” McNulty laughed.”Working with him was great because he really understood the direction we were going and the sound we wanted. There’s always little tensions in a band about the writing process but he took charge and said I’m god so if I like it, it goes in and if I don’t it gets cut.”
The band are made up of a group of friends from Christchurch who moved over to Australia for excitement and a better start in the music industry.
“I moved on a whim on a holiday,” McNulty said. “Christchurch didn’t have much going on and the other guys finished high school and thought well, why not give it a shot so they came out here to see what life would be like.Though Monte didn’t exist in Christchurch, we’d all played together in some capacity, just different types of music.”
And we are lucky to have them here in Australia and hitting Adelaide on Friday night. Monte are looking forward to playing at Blackmarket and giving a knockout show.
“We’re really proud of our live show. We’ve put a lot of effort into making sure we have a tight, solid performance. We think we give a powerful performance which packs a punch above our weight.” McNulty laughed
