A new multi-purpose performance venue in the heart of the city has been announced for next year’s Adelaide Fringe.

The German Club is set to be a Fringe venue next year!

The GC will use the versatile facilities of Adelaide’s German Club (223 Flinders Street, CBD) to host up to 300 performances during the month-long festival, showing how established venues can be imaginatively transformed for the Fringe.

The venue offers six performance rooms over three levels, from intimate spaces to larger showrooms, with audience capacities from 50 through to 500.

New Fringe Director Heather Croall said it was great to see new venues such as The GC becoming available to offer artists even more diverse rooms for their shows at Adelaide Fringe.

“The new spaces in the GC will be a great addition to the amazing array of venues that help transform the city for the month of the Fringe,” Ms Croall said.

Ignition Entertainment Director Alan Rosewarne said The GC opens up a venue that had been “one of Adelaide’s best kept secrets”.

“It’s a fabulous facility in a central location with relatively easy parking, no nearby residents to disturb and within walking distance of the East End and city centre.”

The GC boasts a central bar and bistro as a meeting place for pre and post-show meals and refreshments, all in a secure, air-conditioned building.

“The showrooms also have the potential to provide food and beverage service for cabaret-style performances,” Mr Rosewarne said.

He said his company was in discussion with some larger producers and presenters of Fringe shows – theatre, music, comedy, cabaret and physical theatre – about making The GC their home in 2016.

“We also hope many local artists and presenters will take advantage of the venue’s more intimate spaces.”
Ignition’s focus is on creating a venue that works well for audiences and artists.

“We’ll be providing a comfortable, fully air-conditioned environment with the technical facilities to present everything from stand-up comedy to cabaret,” Mr Rosewarne said.

“Given the potential of the venue to attract 25,000 or more patrons, we’re also talking to a number of sponsors who might wish to connect with our audiences.”

He said The GC was an entirely local venture with the proceeds staying in South Australia and benefiting a community club.

Earlier this year Mr Rosewarne formed Ignition Entertainment with arts veteran Colin Koch, whose career has spanned events ranging from The Adelaide Festival to co-founding WOMAdelaide.
