Wine, grape and cheeseAustralia’s biggest celebration of Australian wine – Aussie Wine Month, will be celebrated at the Adelaide Showground Farmers Market with a series of food and wine pairings featuring the magnificent food and wines produced by stallholders.

There will be some surprises according to chef Jon McKeigue, who coordinates the demonstration kitchen activities for both adults and children and this Sunday 17 May pairing is no exception.  The wine is a full bodied shiraz made by winemaker Graham Brookman at The Food Forest near Gawler. He uses certified organic grapes grown by David Box at in a hidden valley out from Jamestown, miles from any other grapes and not far from the Outback. It’s called The Ladybird because grapes used for the first vintage of the wine were literally crawling with ladybirds, which were carefully rescued by Graham’s son Tom before the fruit could be crushed.

David Box likes to get his grapes fully ripe to the point that there’s so much sugar to ferment that the yeast wipes itself out as the alcohol goes up through 16%. This leaves a hint of retained sugar, along with dense body; yet it is clearly a table wine, not a sticky fortified. Graham thought of  it as a wine to go with a  really big protein-rich meal, However, some of the pairings on Sunday will include cheese and dried fruit from other stallholders in and around the market, as well as a pairing with chocolate that Jon will create into a beautiful showpiece.

Those attending will also hear about The Food Forest’s approach to low-preservative, organic winemaking and the pros and cons of preservatives in winemaking.  Jon and Graham will chat also about food and wine pairing. Children will be able to participate in the construction (and consumption) of the showpiece whilst adults will be allowed a nibble of chocolate.

The food and wine matching session will take place at 11am this Sunday at the farmers market.  The Food Forest wines will be available to tasting and purchase at their stall at the market from 9am-1pm.

Subsequent food and wine pairings will be feature McLaren Vale wines from Sabella Wines on 24 May and McLaren Vale Orchards on 31 May.  The Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market is held on Sunday morning from 9am to 1pm.  Entry via Leader Street.
