Make the swap to Fair Trade

In a move towards tackling poverty and empowering producers in developing countries, Adelaide City Council will today be announced the first Fair Trade Capital City Council in Australia.

This award is being presented as part of Fair Trade Fortnight, which runs until Sunday 16 May. Fair Trade Fortnight is a national campaign run by the Fair Trade Association Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ), which is encouraging people to swap their regular coffee, tea, sugar or chocolate for a fairtrade alternative. During this time, the FTAANZ is asking, “what’s your Fair Trade swap?”

Councillor Stephen Yarwood will accept the Fair Trade Certificate at 11.30am this morning on behalf of Adelaide City Council. The presentation will take place at the Fair Trade stall located in Rundle Mall, in front of the Myer Centre, where shoppers can pick up free samples of fairtrade coffee, tea and sugar.

Councillor Yarwood said that becoming the first Fair Trade Capital City Council is a fantastic achievement.

“More than 30 businesses in Adelaide support the Fair Trade movement, and our goal is to encourage more businesses to take their lead and make the swap,” said Councillor Yarwood.

“Products certified with the Fair Trade Label guarantee that the Third World producers are paid a fair price, have good working conditions and that no child labour was used. It is also about producers practicing more sustainable farming methods.

“By limiting harmful chemicals, farmers produce more natural crops and reduce their impact on the land their children will inherit. A higher price for goods also means better healthcare, education and greater community resilience for a more prosperous future”

Bliss Organic Café, which specialises in delicious organic, vegetarian or vegan food, is just one of the 30 City businesses that offer fairtrade products to their customers.

“At Bliss, we believe that fair terms of trade are important in order to support farmers and workers in the developing world. We provide our customers with fairtrade products such as sugar, coffee, tea, cacao and everyone’s favourite, chocolate!” said the owner of Bliss Organic Café, Kas Ward.

“We are happy to see an increase in knowledge and awareness of fairtrade products among Adelaideans, with more and more local businesses making the switch to Fair Trade.”

Adelaide City Council staff at the North Adelaide Golf Course, Adelaide Aquatic Centre, City libraries, Community Centres, London Road Depot and Colonel Light Centre will soon have the choice of Fair Trade coffee and tea while at work.
