Adelaide Central Market Gearing Up For The Biggest Christmas Yet

Pop-up bars, live music and an abundance of fresh produce. Here’s what’s happening at the Adelaide Central Market in the lead up to Christmas and New Years.

Nearly one million people are expected to visit the Adelaide Central Market throughout December as management and traders get ready for what may be the best trading period on record.

More than 500,000 eager shoppers are anticipated to walk through the Market’s doors in the last two weeks of extended Christmas trade and more than 110,000 shoppers in the final two days before Christmas.

Adelaide Central Market Authority General Manager Aaron Brumby said shoppers would have more time to shop on the weekend and prepare this Christmas with Christmas Eve trading on Sunday 24 December 2017.

“We’re looking forward to an absolutely manic Christmas trade period this year. Having two days of weekend trading leading into Christmas is great news for busy families getting ready for Christmas festivities,” Mr Brumby said.

The Adelaide Central Market’s huge range of Christmas goodies is back this year, including local organic cherries from Central Organics, Lucia’s famous homemade Christmas puddings, house smoked ham from O’Connell Meats and South Australian prawns from Samtass Seafood.

“In the lead up to Christmas, increased customer demand will see traders sell in excess of one million kilograms of fresh produce, thousands of local hams and tonnes of local seafood,” Mr Brumby said.

Fresh South Australian seafood will be in abundance with local fishmonger Samtass Seafood anticipating to sell 10 tonnes of seafood pre-Christmas including five tonnes of Spencer Gulf prawns and 4000 dozen local Smoky Bay oysters.

The Market will also welcome back Producer in Residence Stall, Renn Artisan Macarons, from 19 December with a huge range of festive handmade macarons.

The Adelaide Central Market will turn on the festive cheer every Friday night throughout December in the lead up to Christmas with a Festive Fridays event program featuring a pop-up bar, live music, tastings and Friday night fare from around the Market.

The Market will be open right up until Christmas day, opening at 9am on Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 December and from 6am daily Friday 22 December until Christmas Eve on Sunday.
