The 15th Best Food In The World Hits Adelaide

Fortunately, you no longer have to travel to Portugal to get a taste of the custard tarts that The Guardian dubbed as the 15th best food in the world.

What do you think of when you think of Portugal? Beaches that rival those of Adelaide and mountainous ranges that lend themselves to beautiful horizons. You may also think of the food, the fish-populated dishes and the infamous Pastel de Nata, or Portuguese custard tart.

Fortunately, you no longer have to travel to Portugal to get a taste of the custard tarts that The Guardian dubbed as the 15th best food in the world. Simply pop 20 minutes from the CBD and you’ll find yourself at Saudade, a bakery whose only menu item is the Pastel de Nata (and by all accounts, some seriously good coffee).

You may have seen their blue and white boxes floating around the Adelaide Central Markets, grasped by the hands of some very happy customers, but with their recent move into a more permanent residence in Mitcham Square Shopping Centre, these freshly baked treats are sure to become a staple for the residents of Adelaide.

After moving to Australia, Carla and Mafalda yearned for the unique flavours of their home in Portugal. After learning the art of the Pastel de Nata, they believe they’ve perfected it to create the best Portuguese custard tart in Adelaide.

After opening Saudade, which is an untranslatable Portuguese word for a feeling, a longing, a yearning for someone or something gone and that one doesn’t know if it will ever return, with various pop-ups in the Central Markets, we are more than excited that they’ve opened a more permanent residence so we can get our fix 6 days a week.

With smooth custard in crispy layers of puff pastry, the taste of Portugal will explode in your mouth with every bite. With local ingredients used in every batch, we can’t see a better reason to pop down and say hi to the lovely bunch down there.
