Keith Huff’s A Steady Rain chronicles love and rage on the streets of Chicago as a domestic disturbance call sends two Chicago cops, friends since childhood, on a harrowing journey that will test their loyalties and change their lives forever.
The play opened on Broadway in 2009 with no less than Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig as the Chicago police officers. It is also famous for THAT phone ringing incident involving Jackman that went viral.
Local company, Lost In Translation, brought Adelaide audiences a chance of seeing this intriguing two-hander during this year’s Adelaide Fringe. Playing an almost Sold Out season of six shows and earning a slew of five and four star reviews, with comments such as “…a gripping story, well written and brilliantly performed” (Adelaide Theatre Guide), “Nick Fagan and Rohan Watts are stunningly superb…” (Glam Adelaide) and “Fagan and Watts give performances which are as steady as the rain..” (The Advertiser), it’s no wonder that this production has gained two nominations – “Best Show Drama” and “Best Ensemble” – at this year’s Adelaide Theatre Guide Curtain Call Awards, to be held on the 10th September.

Of the nominations, producer/performer Nick Fagan says “Even after the fantastic reception we received, being nominated for an ATG award, let alone two, was a complete shock. Having paid particular attention to the awards nominees in previous years and knowing the quality of productions that often miss getting nominated due to the sheer number of excellent shows, I never thought we would be in the running. The nominations are so often dominated by the big players in the theatre community and to see Lost In Translation’s name up against the likes of those is quite an honour.”
Lost in Translation have just announced an encore season of 3 nights only of A Steady Rain to take place a week after the awards at the Arch, Holden Street Theatres.
“Restaging A Steady Rain just a week after the ATG’s hopefully means for us that we can generate some interest and a greater audience off of the buzz of the awards’ says Nick.

“Even before we had finished our Fringe run, I knew that an encore season was something that I wanted to do because I wasn’t ready to put this wonderful story to bed yet, especially after the several years of trying to make staging this play a reality. The success of the play, reassured me that I was on the money with this one and I didn’t feel enough people got to see it. Being Fringe time, so much of the Adelaide Theatre community were so busy with seeing other shows and often performing in them, that they weren’t able to see it and despite my best efforts to promote the show a lot of people just didn’t know about it until it was all over.”
“Finding the right venue to restage ‘A Steady Rain’ was very important to me, and quite a task as I felt it was so important to retain the intimacy between the performance and the audience whilst not limiting the number of people that I can fit into the venue. I feel that ‘The Arch’ at Holden Street Theatres was the perfect venue to do this and am very excited to bring the show there.”
