A Splash of Shangri-La in the City, Grand Opening Tonight

A new alfresco dining space, complete with laneway bar, will make a splash in the city this week as part of Premier Jay Weatherill and Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood’s quest to brighten city streets.

Saldechin on King William Street has expanded to an outdoor dining area in Gresham Place and is hosting a Grand Opening party tonight – inviting city-goers to immerse themselves in a ’Shangri-La in the City’.

Gresham Lane and Gresham Place (just off King William Street) are closed to support the initiative and the area feels like an oasis in the city, with a grassed floor, lighting and unique decorations transforming the space.

There is food, music and drinks on offer each day from 11am, until the end of March.

The Splash Adelaide campaign is jointly funded by the State Government and Adelaide City Council, and aims to enliven and activate the city’s underused spaces over summer.

“So far Splash Adelaide has quickly supported a wide range of projects, from street food vendors to reimagined city spaces. This collaboration with businesses, property owners and other community partners has helped us to create exciting new city experiences,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

“This is exactly the kind of project we want to see more of – we want to see innovative approaches that bring vibrancy and activity to the city and we want to see more people spending more time outside, enjoying themselves and soaking up our wonderful city atmosphere.”

Other Splash Adelaide projects currently happening around the city include:

  • Activation of North Terrace, with the cultural institutions programming in outdoor workshops, cinema and more
  • Leigh Street ‘Alfresco Fridays’ with increased outdoor dining and road closure from 12 noon
  • The East End Association’s ‘Summer Fridays’ with the closure of Rundle Street allowing for an outdoor cinema, street food vendors, local shops trading outdoors and the closure of Ebenezer Place, Vardon Avenue and Sym Choon Lane.
  • Giant water balls on either the River Torrens or Bonython Lake.
  • And watch this space for details of a new Bike Hub – coming soon to Hindmarsh Square!

Splash Adelaide will run until the end of March, with more activities to be revealed in the coming weeks.
